Kootenai Hospital
Directs the activities of the Clinical Engineering Department in the selection, procurement, delivery and support of biomedical equipment and services. Ensures all activities are designed and implemented to comply with CMS and Joint Commission and other regulatory and inspection agency requirements, guidelines, and standards. Accountable for biomedical device lifecycle and fleet management. Serves as the primary administrative contact for executive leadership on biomedical technology issues. Acts as an advisor to clinical and operational departments.
Responsibilities
Develops annual and long-range biomedical device fleet management plans and supporting financial and business case justifications
Leads the procurement and lifecycle management planning for supported devices
Develops and implements standard policies and procedures that support functions of the clinical engineering department
Provides operational and financial oversight of the clinical engineering services provided to operational and clinical end users within the organization and at regional partners’ locations
Determines proper staffing levels/staffing model to provide equipment support services; distributes personnel and obtain service contracts based on preventive and corrective maintenance workloads
Establishes and reviews productivity and efficiency metrics; identifies areas where improvements can be instituted to maximize staffing resources and provide the safest, most reliable, and cost-effective equipment support
Collaborates with other clinical and non-clinical departments on projects related to new equipment acquisition, installation, renovation, modification, or removal. May directly oversee or manage the progress and status of such projects.
Identifies training needs for clinical engineering staff and recommends, budgets for, and implements plans to ensure the team has appropriate training, test and calibration equipment, and tools needed to expand the areas of technical services provided by the department
Ensures work requests are handled as appropriate within established service levels
Collaborates with other clinical departments to centralize device management, maintenance, and lifecycle management within the clinical engineering department
Participates in the development of departmental and enterprise continuous quality improvement initiatives
Understands and complies with applicable standards and regulations
Relies of experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
Reforms other related duties as assigned
Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function
Competent to meet age specific needs of the unit assigned
Requirements and Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in electrical, biomedical, or clinical engineering required
Minimum 7 years’ experience in the biomedical service industry; 5 years must be in a supervisory or managerial capacity
Knowledge of many different types and brands of patient care equipment
Knowledge of electronic theory and technology
Ability to evaluate maintenance and cost data related to medical equipment
Ability to scope equipment needs for existing and new facilities
Ability to evaluate equipment service needs and communicate with clinical equipment users on proper device use and safety
Ability to evaluate the use of permanent staff or outside vendor staff for the most effective support mode
