Tufts Medical Center is a level one trauma center and academic medical center located in Boston. The anesthesia technician will assist anesthesiology staff with the preparation and placement of monitoring equipment, support procedures such as arterial and central venous access, fiber‑optic intubation, and airway management, and maintain anesthesia supplies and equipment in the operating rooms. This role is integral to a dynamic, fast‑paced clinical setting and involves a broad range of surgical procedures, including advanced cardiac surgery.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assist anesthesiologist with preparation and placement of neurophysiologic monitors.

Assist with induction by connecting patients to hemodynamic monitoring.

Anticipate needs of anesthesiologist for invasive monitoring and procedures such as arterial access, central venous access, fiber‑optic intubation and difficult airway situations.

Prepare and set up equipment for anesthesia providers and cases, including age‑appropriate anesthesia equipment, monitors, airway support, and transducer lines.

Set up, maintain, and transport specialty devices used in various clinical areas.

Troubleshoot and correct monitoring equipment issues.

Respond immediately to OR room calls for supplies, IV pumps, or other items required during surgical procedures.

Inventory and stock anesthesia supplies, maintaining an inventory of functioning equipment and tracking repairs.

Stock operating rooms, specialty carts, anesthesia carts, equipment rooms, and remote anesthesia areas with disposable/reusable supplies.

Perform responsibilities for the Anesthesia Stat Lab (ASL) according to JACHO guidelines and policy manual.

Prepare and plan equipment needs for the following day’s cases.

Assist leadership with strategic initiatives for process improvement, focusing on safety and efficiency.

JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Read and write at a level necessary to perform all duties, maintain accurate written records, and navigate basic web‑based applications.

Perform anesthesia technician duties competently, with knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology of the cardiopulmonary systems and infection control.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with diverse educational backgrounds in a potentially stressful operating room environment.

Pro‑active customer service orientation.

Three to six months of on‑the‑job training required.

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or equivalent required.

BLS certification for Healthcare Providers required within 90 days of hire.

EXPERIENCE

An equivalent combination of education and experience that provides proficiency in the responsibilities listed may substitute for the above education and experience requirements.

Strength: Ability to lift, reach, carry, push and pull 40–50 pounds or more.

Duration: Ability to stand/sit for eight (8) hours or the length of assignment.

Communication: Speak and hear effectively, meeting telephone and customer service standards.

Reading/Writing: Read and write in English.

Texture: Feel attributes of objects such as size, temperature, or texture by touching with fingertips.

Talking: Express spoken words to convey oral information accurately, quickly, and loudly enough in English.

Hearing: Perceive sounds such as phones ringing, beepers, alarms, and buzzers on equipment.

Vision: Clarity of near and far vision, ability to distinguish color.
