Substation Senior Structural Engineer

HDR is a leading power sector engineering firm committed to inclusion and excellence. Join our national Power Delivery team as a Senior Structural Engineer, where you will design and oversee high‑voltage station structures up to 500‑kV.

Job Overview As a Substation Senior Structural Engineer, you will lead structural design for switchyard, substation, and transmission projects. Responsibilities include detailed design, calculations, review, mentoring, and cross‑disciplinary collaboration.

Responsibilities

Lead, oversee, review, and execute structural engineering tasks for substation components such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes.

Lead, oversee, review, and execute foundation design tasks for substation structures (drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles).

Support physical substation layout designs, plans, elevations/sections, details, and associated bills of materials.

Prepare and review specifications for construction & materials.

Assign project tasks and provide technical guidance to team members.

Coordinate and perform quality checks and reviews in accordance with HDR Quality Management Systems (QMS).

Collaborate with transmission line civil/structural engineers and other disciplines to cross‑train and share resources.

Develop and maintain design standards.

Mentor and supervise Project Engineers, EITs, and CADD/Designers.

Lead multiple concurrent projects utilizing geographically dispersed teams.

Attend training and seminars to develop technical expertise.

Assist in drafting technical papers and presentations for industry conferences.

Participate in project reviews as needed.

Travel may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.

SE license or ability to obtain one (Hawaii and California preferred).

10+ years of technical design experience on high‑voltage projects up to 500‑kV.

Familiarity with NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE‑113, and related standards.

Proficiency with design software such as PLS‑Tower, Mathcad Prime, STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile.

Consulting firm experience.

Strong written and verbal communication.

Strong conceptual, organizational, problem‑solving, and collaboration skills.

Self‑starter, independent and team‑oriented.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.

Minimum 10 years of structural engineering experience related to building design.

Professional engineering license recognized by the local licensing board.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or equivalent.

Experience with design calculations and layouts.

Ability to design and detail in steel, concrete, masonry, and wood.

Understanding of gravity and lateral analysis.

Experience with a consulting firm.

Benefits The targeted salary range for this position is $132,107 – $204,500, depending on experience and location.

Location Primary: United States – North Carolina – Charlotte. (Other U.S. locations available.)

Schedule Full‑time.
