Assistant Director of Membership Location: West Suburban YMCA, YMCA of the USA.

Job Description Come join our team and help create an unforgettable member experience! The role is customer‑facing, requiring high energy, positivity, and a commitment to service. You will work closely with the Membership Director to support day‑to‑day operations, staff development, and membership growth initiatives.

Schedule Ideal schedule: Tuesday – Saturday (Sundays and Mondays off).

Typical schedule: 2 pm – 10 pm; Saturdays 11 am – 7 pm.

Position Summary Assists in all aspects of membership: recruiting new members, retaining existing members, supervising part‑time staff, and implementing new procedures to achieve strategic goals. Plans and implements member appreciation days and other retention events.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Two years of supervisory experience in customer service preferred.

Excellent PC skills and experience with standard business software.

Commitment to anti‑racist work, with active recruitment of diverse staff and volunteers.

Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups.

Able to analyze information, identify problems and trends, and solve complex problems.

Strong time‑management skills.

Dynamic personality to educate and motivate Welcome Center staff.

Reliable, visible, consistent, and professional.

Y‑USA Team Leader Certificate preferred.

First Aid and CPR certifications within 30 days of hire.

Essential Functions

Implement membership strategies for recruitment and retention.

Create a member‑focused culture, modeling relationship‑building skills (including Listen First).

Assist the director in recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, leading welcome center personnel and volunteers; evaluate staff performance and motivate achievement.

Promote program and membership enrollment; coordinate registrations and support marketing efforts.

Maintain staff scheduling for Member Service Representatives; backup front‑desk staff.

Support DEIB statement; research, recommend, and implement diversity strategies.

Update and maintain a Customer Service Operational Training Manual.

Develop detailed training programs for the SGA computer system, telephone etiquette, meeting and greeting members, and facility history.

Ensure the customer‑service area is supplied with informational materials, schedules, and forms.

Communicate daily events, policy changes, promotions to staff.

Ensure proper implementation of Welcome Center procedures, review and update desk procedures.

Coordinate with business office for financial transactions.

Participate in staff and related meetings.

Motivate and energize Membership Staff as cause‑driven leaders; organize training on sales, customer service, Listen First, cause‑driven leadership.

Provide facility tours and develop scripts for new employees.

Help Membership Staff understand YMCA’s mission.

Model and teach cause‑driven leadership characteristics.

Mentor and train volunteers or interns.

Flexible and adaptable schedule, including weekend day and evening or early morning hours; includes opening and closing responsibilities.

May assist in processing payroll.

Organize monthly membership events and community events; coordinate registration, staffing, promotional items.

Run membership reports (e.g., reciprocity reports) and ensure trends are noted and numbers accurately documented.
