Senior Lead DevOps Engineer (Contract) - Job#5855 Location: Richmond, Virginia - Onsite 4+ days

Overview The Lead DevOps Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the enterprise DevOps ecosystem across secure, cloud‑based, and hybrid environments. This role partners closely with Application Development, Infrastructure, Security, Data, and SRE teams to deliver highly scalable, secure, and reliable technology solutions. The position requires deep hands‑on engineering experience, strong collaboration skills, and the ability to lead complex enterprise initiatives.

Key Responsibilities DevOps Architecture & Engineering

Design, architect, and deploy new application components, infrastructure, and DevOps frameworks.

Implement and maintain continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) environments.

Optimize existing deployment pipelines and introduce new automation technologies to improve quality, speed, and reliability.

Build and maintain AWS environments using Terraform and Infrastructure as Code.

Support and troubleshoot complex build, release, and infrastructure issues across production environments.

Write configuration and automation scripts (YAML, JSON, etc.) to streamline workflows and eliminate manual processes.

Design and deploy cloud‑based solutions for client‑facing applications as they migrate to AWS.

Tooling, Automation & Integration

Maintain and enhance build/deployment processes for all products.

Develop integrations and plugins for security tools within CI/CD pipelines.

Manage configuration/build management, containerization, and deployment tools including GitLab, Azure DevOps, Docker, Kubernetes, XLDeploy/XLRelease, Nexus/Artifactory, and others.

Actively monitor, administer, and improve cloud‑hosted applications.

Evaluate new DevOps tools, technologies, and processes to support scalability and modernization.

Collaboration & Leadership

Collaborate with Developers, QA, Product Owners, and other technical teams to define and enforce DevOps best practices.

Coach developers on techniques for building scalable, cloud‑ready applications.

Conduct periodic spot checks with product teams to accelerate delivery and improve product quality.

Participate in engineering design sessions, deployment planning, and architectural reviews.

Work horizontally across IT—including infrastructure, networking, security, and data management—to ensure smooth integration and delivery.

Lead build and deploy activities across QA and production environments.

Security, Governance & Compliance

Implement and maintain security controls aligned with organizational policies.

Prepare, analyze, and remediate vulnerabilities using tools such as Fortify, SonarQube, SonaType Nexus/Lifecycle.

Manage secrets using AWS Secrets Manager, Parameter Store, and HashiCorp Vault.

Support data security, governance standards, and secure cloud operations.

Strategic Impact

Contribute to product system architecture, design, development, and deployment strategies.

Research and recommend integration/deployment technologies aligned with engineering investment roadmaps.

Lead innovation and selection of new technologies in support of enterprise integration engineering initiatives.

Serve as a technical expert for high‑priority and business‑critical DevOps and integration projects.

Required Qualifications Technical Experience

7+ years delivering technology solutions in a DevOps architectural or senior engineering capacity with hands‑on experience building and integrating complex, multi‑functional components.

5+ years leading or managing technical projects across multiple workstreams.

Extensive hands‑on experience with CI/CD, build/release management, and containerization using tools such as GitLab, Azure DevOps, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS services.

Expertise supporting build and deployment into IIS, AWS EC2, Lambda, Fargate, ECS and/or EKS.

Strong knowledge of Git, source control administration, repository managers (Nexus or Artifactory), and artifact management.

Experience integrating Java, JavaScript/Node.js, and .NET technology stacks with enterprise build and release pipelines.

Proficiency with secure Windows and RHEL environments.

Experience with environment management and IaC tools including Terraform.

Familiarity with IDEs (Eclipse, Visual Studio) and integrating build tools across the enterprise.

Experience working with vulnerabilities scanning tools (Fortify, SonarQube, Nexus Lifecycle) and implementing remediation in CI/CD workflows.

Knowledge of APIs and plugins for integrating security tools into DevOps pipelines.

Knowledge of Database DevOps tools such as Flyway or DBMaestro.

Experience with cloud‑based SRE practices.

Ability to solve complex problems across multiple environments using scripting and automation.

Education & Eligibility

Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, Information Management, or equivalent experience.

U.S. Citizenship required.
