Job Title Tax Senior Manager, Nonprofit – BDO USA

Job Summary The Tax Senior Manager, Nonprofit (Senior Manager) is a client-facing role that advises nonprofit clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluates alternative actions to reduce tax burden and compliance costs, and provides primary technical support for complex nonprofit tax issues.

Responsibilities

Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensures firm policies and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM) are followed.

Conducts reviews of tax return workpapers (T/R’s) and resolves all tax issues with clients, involving specialists where appropriate.

Plans early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with clients and partners as appropriate.

Reviews Forms 990, 990-PF, and 990-T workpapers and disclosure for audited financial statements.

Plans and reviews the tax process and procedures to include budgeting and staffing, monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs. budget, timely billing including management of identified out‑of‑scope activity and communication to client, timely collection of A/R, and provides timely advice to clients.

Identifies complex issues for research, frames issues, reports analysis, and involves firm specialists as appropriate.

Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing current and future taxes.

Applies tax knowledge and business/industry understanding to recommend solutions and organizes the Specialized Tax Services (STS) assistance on ongoing client projects.

Serves as a technical resource to peers within the region.

Manages written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistance.

Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve client, firm, or personnel positions (e.g., reduce taxes or expenses, provide nonprofit tax benefits).

Reviews studies of tax implications and offers clients alternative courses of action.

Researches and implements nonprofit tax strategies, including experimentation with new strategies and ideas.

Identifiers and leverages lessons learned on prior projects and offers input on process and method improvements.

Supervises RISE Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers on all projects; reviews work prepared by the team; provides review comments; trains the team on software, research skills, and research framing; acts as a career advisor; schedules and manages workload; and provides performance feedback.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Statistics, or another focus area and a CPA certification (required).

Master’s degree in Accountancy or Taxation (preferred).

Eight (8) or more years of nonprofit tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience (required).

Supervisory experience (required).

CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent) (required).

Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite (required).

Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software (preferred).

Superior verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to effectively delegate work as needed.

Strong analytical, research, and critical‑thinking skills and decision‑making ability.

Ability to work well in a team environment.

Ability to develop and manage a team of tax professionals.

Ability to compose written tax advice and maintain client relationships.

Executive presence and ability to act as the primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions to clients.

Benefits & Compensation Illinois: $140,000 – $190,000

Minnesota: $130,000 – $190,000

NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $150,000 – $200,000
