Job Description
The Tax Senior Manager, Nonprofit (Senior Manager) is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex nonprofit tax issues. The Senior Manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax disclosure, exemption, and unrelated business income issues, communicates potential risks and changes in tax policy, and makes top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies. The role is a critical member of the regional Nonprofit Tax team, actively participating in marketing and networking within an area of expertise and maintaining client relationships. Job Duties
Ensure client compliance with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens. Conduct review of T/R’s and resolve all tax issues with client, involving specialists as appropriate. Plan for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consult with the client and/or partner as needed. Review Forms 990, 990‑PF and 990‑T workpapers and disclosures for audited financial statements. Plan and review the tax process and procedures to include:
Budgeting and staffing. Monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs. budget with assistance of Senior. Timely billing, including management of out‑of‑scope activity and communication to client. Timely collection of accounts receivable. Manage client relationships/expectations in accordance with the project. Provide timely advice to clients.
Research
Identify complex issues to be researched, frame issues clearly and concisely, and report the analysis. Involve firm specialists as appropriate. Tax Consulting
Assist with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing current and future taxes. Apply tax knowledge and business/industry insight to recommend solutions. Develop and implement a work plan including Specialised Tax Services (STS) assistance on ongoing projects. Serve as a technical resource to peers within the region. Manage written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistance. Ensure client service teams comply with Firm policy regarding Written Tax Advice (WTA). Strategy Development
Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the firm, or firm personnel. Review studies of tax implications and offer clients alternative courses of action. Research and implement nonprofit tax strategies, including experimentation with promising new strategies. Identify and leverage lessons learned on prior projects, and offer input on how to improve processes and methods. Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise RISE Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers on all projects. Review work prepared by the Nonprofit Tax team and provide review comments. Train the team on current software tools. Act as a career advisor to team members. Schedule and manage workload of Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers. Provide verbal and written performance feedback. Train on research skills and help frame nonprofit tax issues for analysis. Frame projects and issues for effective delegation. Education
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics OR Bachelor’s degree in any other focus area and a CPA certification, required. Master’s degree in Accountancy or Taxation, preferred. Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Eight (8) or more years of nonprofit tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience. Supervisory experience. CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA), required. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software, preferred. Superior verbal and written communication skills. Effective delegation skills. Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills. Teamwork ability. Ability to develop and manage a team of tax professionals. Ability to compose written tax advice. Ability to develop and maintain client relationships. Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions. Salary Ranges
Illinois: $140,000 – $190,000 Minnesota: $130,000 – $190,000 NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $150,000 – $200,000 About Us
