Duties & Responsibilities Purpose of Position:
This class of positions encompasses professional staff, supervisory, clinical and administrative work within a pharmacy department, with varying degrees of latitude for independent initiative and judgment. Under direct supervision, with wide latitude, supervises a Pharmacy unit and/or performs as a specialty clinical pharmacist.
Typical Tasks
Fills prescriptions and patient orders, resolves discrepancies, follows up on problems.
Utilizes clinical data to evaluate physician orders ensuring appropriate therapy.
Provides drug information and patient counseling; documents interventions, ADRs, and medication errors.
Directs personnel including technicians, aides, and clerical staff.
Assists in monthly inspections of patient care units and the Pharmacy.
Maintains adequate medication supply in work area.
Participates in Pharmacy staff in‑services and meetings relating to system‑wide programs.
Operates and troubleshoots automated dispensing systems as needed.
Advises prescribers on non‑formulary drug alternatives.
Utilizes outpatient and inpatient computerized systems to enter and access patient care information.
Coordinates and analyzes statistics and/or clinical data.
Participates in quality management and utilization review programs.
May coordinate work of small groups to accomplish projects or assignments.
May prepare and review policies and procedures.
May assist in developing, implementing and executing training curriculum.
May assist in supervising a Pharmacy unit in absence of the supervisor.
Additional Level II Responsibilities
Supervises and/or coordinates operation of a Pharmacy unit or major function.
Prepares departmental reports, including statistical analyses.
Develops and implements new processes to improve Pharmacy operations and care quality.
Orients new staff members.
Monitors and evaluates staff performance and follows disciplinary procedures.
Prepares unit work schedule.
Ensures staff compliance with regulatory agencies and rules.
Maintains adequate medication and supplies.
Evaluates new FDA drugs for efficacy, side effects, and cost; makes formulary recommendations.
Manages medication therapy of patient groups as part of interdisciplinary team; participates in rounds.
Coordinates assessment of medication use.
Serves as professional and technical resource for medical professionals in specialty areas.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a valid NY State license to practice pharmacy.
Two years of post‑licensure experience, or completion of a post‑graduate specialty residency or fellowship program, or current Pharmacy Board Certification.
