Position Overview A Hardscape Team Leader is an experienced team member working in the hardscape division of the company. This position leads a team of two or more in the installation of pavers, retaining walls, water features, low‑voltage lighting, utilities, concrete, and stonework as well as managing subcontractors on‑site. A Hardscape Team Leader is able to operate a variety of equipment and has basic horticultural knowledge. He/she has advanced knowledge in construction means, methods, techniques, electricity, basic plumbing, and work with minimal supervision.
Job Functions
Review job notes for clear understanding of scope of work to be performed on daily basis
Plan daily tasks, labor, materials, and equipment for current and next day's work
Read, measure, and interpret landscape, architectural, and civil plans
Lead team members performing the following landscape and hardscape services:
Landscape bed installation and maintenance
Pruning: horticulturally correct tree/shrub/perennial pruning and deadheading
Irrigation: proper installation, controller programming, minor irrigation repairs, and seasonal adjustment
Water features: installation of water features
Lighting: proper installation of low‑voltage lighting systems, controller programming, repair and replacement of lighting system components
Drainage: installation of drainage pipe, drain boxes, drainage channels, dry creek beds, and swales
Excavation and grading: use machinery, hand tools, and grade measuring tools to properly excavate, contour, shape, and fine grade soil to achieve desired look and function
Watering: new install plant and turf watering
Plant installation: plant identification, bed preparation, proper plant installation, layout, care and maintenance
Spring clean‑ups: bed cleanout, bed edging, pre‑emergent, plant fertilization, and mulch installation
Pavers: installation of interlocking concrete pavers
Retaining walls: installation using segmental retaining walls, boulders and natural stone
Stepping stones and steps: installation using natural stone
Masonry: mix and prepare mortar for wet lay applications including firepits, fireplaces, flagstone patios, coping stone, capstones, cobblestone edging, and grouting
Concrete: knowledge of different mixes and applications that are used for footings, mud slabs, and broom finish and ability to install each application
Utilities: how to call in a utility locate, update an existing ticket, and identify utility markings
Blowing: using handheld or backpack blower to blow off all hard surfaces
Snow removal
Any other tasks necessary.
Operates small and medium duty tools and equipment to include but not limited to: compact track loaders, track loader, mini‑excavator, pressure washer, hedge trimmers, backpack blowers, bed edgers, re‑definers, rototiller, chainsaw, pole saw, string trimmer, ladder, backpack sprayer, dump trailer/bed, mulching trailer, wheel loader, zip level, tape measure, cordless & hammer drill, sawzall, circular saw, voltage meter, plumb bob, level, gas/electric water pumps, architectural and engineers scale
Plan, order, and receive bulk materials
Manage subcontractors on site
Identifies enhancement ideas to improve client property and submits via issue tickets.
Learns and has a working knowledge of all properties, responsibilities, and knows the limits of work.
Working Conditions Time will be spent in an outdoor environment with limited ability to control noise, airborne contaminants, and temperature. Be able to lift 50 pounds regularly.
The team member is expected to work the assigned hours at Southern Landscape Group from Monday through Friday as well as weekends & overtime as dictated by seasonal needs. This is an hourly wage position with a normally expected workday of 6:50 AM until 5:00 PM.
Requirements
A high school degree or GED is required as well as two years of documented experience in the green industry
Must have great verbal and written communication skills
Must be able to use Apple technology for time tracking and job management
Must have great analytical problem solving and decision‑making ability
Must have excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate with clients and professionals
Ability to use Google translate efficiently to communicate with Spanish speaking workers
Responsible for training and coaching a team of two or more team members to help develop their skills & ensure team members receive proper training
Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient job site and ensure truck/tools/equipment are properly maintained.
Ensure daily tasks are completed on schedule and budget to quality standard
Responsible for all tools being returned to the shop at the end of a workday and tagging any tools needing repairs
Ability to drive truck & trailer combinations
Maintain a neat and clean professional appearance
Performs daily check‑ins with Group Leader by 3:00 PM to discuss current project status and equipment needs for the following day
Works as a team member throughout Southern Landscape Group with a positive attitude
Knows and supports the company’s vision, mission, and core values
Certifications
Valid Virginia driver’s license with insurable driving record
VDACS Registered Tech Certification
CPR/First Aid Certification
NALP Landscape Technician Cert. - Landscape Install & Irrigation
VCH (Skilled)
Valid Virginia CDL class “A”, with “O” exemption and valid medical card (skilled)
ICPI (Skilled Team Leader level)
NCMA (Skilled Team Leader level)
