Position Overview The Mowing Team Leader is an experienced team member working with minimal supervision. The primary function of the Mowing Team Leader is to direct the activities of a team of two or more employees on a job. The Mowing Team Leader is able to operate a variety of equipment and has basic horticultural knowledge.
Job Functions
Reviewing job notes for clear understanding of scope of work to be performed on a daily basis
Plan daily tasks, labor, materials, and equipment for current and next day’s work
Read and interpret aerial service maps
Working knowledge and understanding of pesticides used
Mix and apply various pesticides using proper PPE and application techniques
Lead team members performing the following landscape services:
Mowing: use push, walk‑behind, and stand‑on mowers to cut turf using alternating mowing patterns
Edging: use stick edger to hard edge turf against hardscape surfaces; use string trimmer to soft edge around softscape edges and trim unreachable turf areas by mower
Blowing: using handheld or backpack blower to blow off all hard surfaces
Landscape bed maintenance: spray and pull weeds
Pruning: horticulturally correct tree/shrub/perennial pruning
Plant health: identify basic plant health issues regarding diseases and insects
Irrigation: controller programming, minor irrigation repairs, and seasonal adjustment
Floral services: care and maintenance
Spring clean‑ups: bed cleanout, bed edging, pre‑emergent, plant fertilization, and mulch installation
Leaf removal: use of Ventrac, backpack blowers, stand‑on zero‑turns with baggers, and truck‑mounted leaf vac to conduct seasonal leaf removals
Snow removal
Any other tasks necessary
Operate small and medium duty tools and equipment including but not limited to: push mower, zero‑turn mower, walk‑behind mower, leaf vac, Ventrac, hedge trimmers, backpack blowers, bed edgers, re‑definers, rototiller, chainsaw, pole saw, string trimmer, stick edger, ladder, backpack sprayer, dump trailer/bed, mulching trailer, wheel loader
Identify enhancement ideas to improve client property and submit via issue tickets
Learn and have a working knowledge of all properties, responsibilities and limits of work
Working Conditions Time will be spent in an outdoor environment with limited ability to control noise, airborne contaminants, and temperature. Be able to lift 50 pounds regularly. The team member is expected to work the assigned hours at Southern Landscape Group from Monday through Friday as well as weekends & overtime as dictated by seasonal needs. This is an hourly wage position with a normally expected workday of 6:50 AM until 5:00 PM.
Requirements
A high school degree or GED is required as well as two years of documented experience in the green industry
Great verbal and written communication skills
Ability to use Apple technology for time tracking and job management
Great analytical problem‑solving and decision‑making ability
Excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate with clients and professionals
Ability to use Google Translate efficiently to communicate with Spanish‑speaking workers
Responsible for training and coaching a team of two or more team members to help develop their skills & ensure team members receive proper training
Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient job site and ensure truck/tools/equipment are properly maintained
Ensure daily tasks are completed on schedule and budget to quality standard
Responsible for all tools being returned to the shop at the end of a workday and tagging any tools needing repairs
Ability to drive truck & trailer combinations
Maintain a neat and clean professional appearance
Perform daily check‑ins with Group Leader by 3:00 PM to discuss current project status and equipment needs for the following day
Work as a team member throughout Southern Landscape Group with a positive attitude
Know and support the company’s vision, mission, and core values
Certifications
Valid Virginia driver’s license with insurable driving record
VDACS Registered Tech Certification
CPR/First Aid Certification
NALP Landscape Technician Cert. – Landscape Install & Irrigation
VCH (Skilled)
Valid Virginia CDL class “A”, with “O” exemption and valid medical card (skilled)
