Position Overview A Horticulture Team Technician is an experienced team member working under the supervision of a team leader. The primary function of a Horticulture Team Technician is to assist the Horticulture Team Leader in performing horticultural services on client properties. A Horticulture Team Technician is able to operate a variety of equipment and has thorough horticultural knowledge as well as lighting, water gardens, and irrigation.
Job Functions
Reviewing job notes for clear understanding of scope of work to be performed on a daily basis
Read, measure, and interpret landscape plans
Working knowledge and understanding of pesticides used
Mix and apply various pesticides using proper PPE and application techniques
Perform the following landscape services:
Landscape bed maintenance: spray and pull weeds
Pruning: horticulturally correct tree/shrub/perennial pruning and dead heading
Plant health: identify, diagnose, and treat plant health issues regarding diseases and insects
Irrigation: minor irrigation repairs
Water features: care & maintenance of pumps, aquatic plants, water chemistry, and fish
Lighting: repair and replace low‑voltage lighting
Floral services: annual plant identification, bed preparation, proper plant installation, layout, care, and maintenance
Spring clean‑ups: bed cleanout, bed edging, pre‑emergent, plant fertilization, and mulch installation
Blowing: using handheld or backpack blower to blow off all hard surfaces
Snow removal
Any other tasks necessary.
Operates small and medium duty tools and equipment to include but not limited to: hedge trimmers, backpack blowers, bed edgers, re‑definers, rototiller, string trimmer, ladder, backpack sprayer, dump trailer/bed, mulching trailer, wheel loader, tape measure, plumb bob, level
Identifies enhancement ideas to improve client property and submits to team leader
Learns and has a working knowledge of all properties, responsibilities and knows limits of work.
Working Conditions Time will be spent in an outdoor environment with limited ability to control noise, airborne contaminants, and temperature. Be able to lift 50 pounds regularly. The team member is expected to work the assigned hours at Southern Landscape Group from Monday through Friday as well as weekends & overtime as dictated by seasonal needs. This is an hourly wage position with a normally expected workday of 7:00 AM until 5:00 PM.
Requirements
A high school degree or GED is required as well as two years of documented experience in the green industry
Must have great verbal and written communication skills
Must be able to use Apple technology for time tracking and job management
Must have great analytical problem solving and decision making ability
Must have excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate with clients and professionals
Ability to use Google translate efficiently to communicate with Spanish speaking workers
Assist team leader with training and coaching a team of two or more team members to help develop their skills & ensure team members receive proper training
Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient job site and ensures truck/tools/equipment are properly maintained.
Ensure daily tasks are completed on schedule and budget to quality standard
Responsible for all tools being returned to the shop at the end of a workday and tagging any tools needing repairs
Ability to drive truck & trailer combinations
Maintain a neat and clean professional appearance
Works as a team member throughout Southern Landscape Group with a positive attitude
Knows and supports the company’s vision, mission, and core values
Certifications
Valid Virginia driver’s license with insurable driving record
Valid Virginia CDL class “A”, with “O” exemption and valid medical card (Skilled Technician level)
VDACS Registered Tech Certification
CPR/First Aid Certification
