Job Purpose The Director of Plant Operations is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all aspects of the hospital’s physical plant, maintenance, safety, and facility management programs. This includes oversight of building systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing), grounds, utilities, environmental safety, and compliance with regulatory standards to ensure a safe, efficient, and comfortable environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
Essential Functions Facility Management & Maintenance
Oversee maintenance of hospital buildings, grounds, and equipment.
Ensure proper functioning of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and life safety systems.
Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs.
Manage renovations, construction projects, and capital improvements.
Safety & Compliance
Maintain compliance with OSHA, Center of Improvement in Healthcare Quality (CIHQ), NFPA, and other regulatory standards.
Serve as Safety Officer; lead Environment of Care and Safety Committees.
Conduct regular safety inspections and fire drills.
Ensure infection control and hazardous materials handling protocols are followed.
Budget & Resource Management
Prepare and manage departmental operating and capital budgets.
Monitor expenditures and ensure cost‑effective operations.Negotiate and manage vendor contracts for maintenance and repair services.
Leadership & Staff Development
Promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
Ensure staff competency in emergency preparedness and disaster response.
Emergency Preparedness
Provide 24/7 coverage for emergencies related to facility operations.
Develop contingency plans for utility failures and natural disasters.

Qualifications Education
High School Diploma or equivalent required;
Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or related field preferred.
Licensure & Certifications
Valid driver’s license;
Certifications in HVAC, or related trade, safety or facilities management (e.g., CHFM) preferred.
Experience
Minimum 5 years in plant operations or facilities management, with at least 3 years in a healthcare or hospital environment.
Skills
Knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and accreditation standards.
Strong leadership and organizational skills.
Strong communication skills, both oral and written, in English.
Ability to read and understand facility drawings and technical documentation.
Proficiency with computer applications, including building automation and maintenance management systems.
Critical thinking skills for troubleshooting mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems.
Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
Customer service skills with effective listening.
Working Conditions
May be subject to hostile and emotionally upset patients, family members, personnel and visitors.
May be required to work additional hours as dictated by the workload.
Must be willing to work beyond scheduled hours and holidays, when necessary.
Subject to frequent interruptions.
Physical Requirements
May require extended work hours and travel as needed.
Frequently walking, bending, and lifting up to 40 pounds.
Exposure to varying temperatures, noise, and potential hazards.
