The
Director of Plant Operations
is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all aspects of the physical plant, maintenance, safety, and facility management programs within the hospital. This role ensures a safe, comfortable, and efficient environment through oversight of building systems, environmental safety, and regulatory compliance.

Essential Duties & Key Responsibilities Facility Management & Operations
Oversees maintenance and functionality of hospital buildings, grounds, and equipment.
Ensures proper performance of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and life safety systems.
Leads preventive and corrective maintenance programs.
Coordinates renovations, construction projects, and capital improvements.
Maintains inventory of maintenance supplies and equipment.
Safety, Regulatory & Accreditation Compliance
Ensures compliance with OSHA, CIHQ, NFPA, CMS, and state regulations.
Serves as the Safety Officer and leads Environment of Care and Safety Committees.
Conducts routine safety rounds, inspections, and emergency preparedness drills.
Supports infection control and hazardous materials management.
Maintains regulatory survey readiness at all times.
Financial & Resource Management
Develops and manages departmental operating and capital budgets.
Controls expenditures to ensure cost‑effective facility operations.
Secures, negotiates, and evaluates vendor contracts and professional service agreements.
Leadership & Staff Management
Selects, trains, and supervises plant operations and maintenance personnel.
Oversees staff scheduling, performance reviews, and competency validation.
Promotes employee safety, teamwork, and professional development.
Emergency Preparedness
Provides 24/7 on‑call response for facility and system emergencies.
Develops contingency plans for utility outages, equipment failures, or disasters.
Coordinates incident response with interdisciplinary leadership.
Collaboration & Communication
Works closely with administration, clinical leaders, and external contractors.
Communicates facility issues proactively and provides timely resolution.
Supports strategic planning aligned with the hospital’s mission and operational priorities.
Other Duties
Performs other duties as assigned to support the overall effectiveness of the hospital.
Minimum Qualifications Education
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or related field preferred.
Licensure & Certifications
Valid driver’s license required.
Certifications in HVAC, CHFM, or related fields preferred.
Experience
Minimum 5 years of plant operations or facility management experience.
At least 3 years in a healthcare or hospital environment required.
Skills
Knowledge of building codes, life safety systems, and accreditation standards.
Strong organizational, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and lead a team effectively.
Ability to read blueprints and interpret technical documentation.
Proficiency in computer‑based building automation and work order systems.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
May be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on operational needs.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, and lifting up to 40 lbs.
Exposure to varying temperatures, equipment noise, and potential hazards.
May encounter stressful situations and emotionally upset individuals.
