Senior Staff Accountant Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Staff Accountant will be responsible for all billing processing and application of receipts across multiple collection platforms. Responsibilities include invoicing, revenue recognition, ensuring accurate and timely billing and application, maintaining documentation, reconciling data, and performing collection outreach on delinquent accounts. This team member must be highly detailed, ensuring adherence to client commitments, safeguarding revenue, and adapting to changing priorities and timelines while collaborating and communicating clearly and effectively across various departments and third‑party stakeholders.

Responsibilities

Receive and process fees and program revenue, miscellaneous cash receipts, and payments by check, credit card, or ACH.

Process all payments made by credit card, ACH, checks, and wires, and record transactions into the accounting system (Sage Intacct).

Investigate and resolve billing discrepancies from unapplied or misapplied payments and chargebacks.

Follow up and collect on delinquent accounts, coordinate with outside collection agencies, and prepare appropriate collection communications.

Prepare regular reporting of Accounts Receivable outstanding, including payment history, and identify emerging collections issues for appropriate action by the Business Office.

Allocate cash receipts from multiple sources and adjust accounts for related adjustments, discounts, waivers, and refunds.

Track payment status and research cash receipt postings to resolve discrepancies.

Support monthly reconciliation of external systems, portals, and sub‑ledger systems to the general ledger data.

Serve as the back‑up for the Accounts Payable duties when needed.

Assist the Controller with audit inquiries, including preparing schedules and back‑up support.

Continuously evaluate and make recommendations to enhance collections and system efficiency and accuracy.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

B.A./B.S. degree in accounting or a related discipline.

Minimum two years of accounting experience in a nonprofit or similar environment (preferred).

Experience with Intacct Sage accounting software and credit card merchant processing (preferred).

This is a hybrid role located in Washington, DC and requires reporting in the office for a minimum of two days a week.
