Part‑Time Police Officer

Salary Range: $29.04–$37.18 per hour (Hourly, Non‑Exempt)
Position Summary
The Part‑Time Police Officer is responsible for maintaining public safety, enforcing laws, and providing community support on a flexible, part‑time basis. This position involves patrolling assigned areas, responding to calls for service, conducting investigations, and collaborating with community members to prevent and address criminal activity. The officer upholds the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and public service while assisting full‑time personnel in fulfilling the department’s mission.
Job Duties
- Prepares complete and accurate incident reports.
- Operates a patrol vehicle and patrols assigned areas to keep the peace and protect life and property.
- Investigates criminal violations, makes arrests, prepares arrest and search warrants, and serves warrants.
- Collects and preserves evidence and maintains records for tracking and legal proceedings.
- Testifies in court proceedings.
- Attends and participates in assigned training.
- Maintains knowledge of applicable state, federal, and city codes, ordinances, and department rules and regulations related to law enforcement.
- Maintains knowledge of modern principles and procedures of law enforcement work, court evidence procedures, and court decisions affecting law enforcement practices.
- Maintains reading and writing ability at a level sufficient for all duties of a McFarland Police Officer.
- Handles other duties as assigned.
Examination
- Physical ability test (qualifying only): Assessed to determine overall physical capability for the position. Candidates must pass to proceed further.
- Oral exam (weight 100%): Evaluates training, education, experience, interest, and personal fitness for the role.
- Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the exam process.
Qualifications
- Possession of a California Class C Driver’s License.
- High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent, successful graduation from a California POST‑approved Police or Sheriff’s Academy (Basic Peace Officer Course); or possession of a Basic or Higher POST Certificate.
- Must meet POST citizen requirements (U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien eligible for / applied for citizenship).
- Must be able to read, write, and communicate at a level sufficient for all duties of a McFarland Police Officer.
Background Evaluation
The evaluation will include a psychological assessment and overall suitability review. Candidates deemed unsuitable must wait a minimum of twelve months before reapplying.
