Position Summary The purpose of the Pathologists' Assistant (PA) is to aid pathologists with the diagnosis of each case on the specimen level. Under the supervision of the Grossing Supervisor and general technical direction of pathologists, the PA Trainer is responsible for training new and current PA’s and Grossing Technicians in the accurate description and dissection of all specimens, in a fast paced, high‑volume environment. The PA Trainer is also responsible for assisting in the training of any students in the University of Washington PA training program who may rotate through the CellNetix Grossing department. The PA Trainer is also expected to maintain ASCP certification. The PA Trainer must adhere to HIPAA standards. Due to various environmental hazards presented in the workplace such as formalin, communicable disease, fresh human tissue, etc., employees must also adhere to strict Standard Operating Procedures and Personal Protective Equipment requirements.

Position Schedule M‑F, 10am - 6:30pm with flexibility to shift up to 1‑2 hours earlier or later depending on the trainee's permanent schedule.

Responsibilities

Train new Pathologists’ Assistants and Grossing Technicians in the current Grossing protocols, including dissection, triage, and gross descriptions

Track and maintain the trainee’s training checklist, and sign off on specimens when deemed competent

Review trainee dictations to ensure they align with the current Grossing protocols

Complete spot checks on trainee’s empty containers to ensure that biopsy specimens are entirely submitted

Attend monthly training meetings to update Grossing leadership on trainees’ development

Gross all types of surgical specimens, simple to complex

Gross Photography

Handling of certain tissue types for special studies

Troubleshoot including re‑accessioning cases, auditing specimen codes, field questions from various laboratory departments

Assist with research as needed

Assist in competency assessments as needed

Other duties as assigned

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Knowledgeable of current Grossing protocols

Ability to interact and adapt to different training methods

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Excellent attention to detail

Basic PC skills including Microsoft Office Suite, and ability to learn new software

Demonstrate ability to perform effectively under pressure

Highly adaptable

Ability to prioritize

Ability to focus

Must be able to work independently

Strong personal skills

Qualifications/Experience

Graduate of a NAACLS accredited Pathologists’ Assistant Program.

At least 2 years of experience as an ASCP‑certified Pathologists’ Assistant is required
