Job Summary We have an exciting opportunity for a Systems Administrator to join our Magnetic Fusion Energy Division located in Torrey Pines (San Diego), CA. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.; we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa.

With consultative direction and within an assigned functional unit, this position is responsible for applying advanced computational and data science principles to develop and maintain the smooth operation of multi‑user computer systems in support of fusion energy research activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Develop, monitor, and enforce the organization’s policies and standards for office automation equipment and computing resources.

Integrate organization policies and standards with company policies and standards.

Administer user accounts, maintain documentation, install system hardware and software, allocate mass storage, secure computing resources, and back up systems to ensure data integrity.

Act in a consulting and technical leadership role with management on short‑ and long‑term planning to ensure strategic and operational effectiveness of information systems service delivery, including a strategy for national HPC centers and cloud resources.

Coordinate electronic office systems activities, including personal computers, server systems and associated software, and standard software products.

Analyze new hardware and software, make purchase recommendations, and plan and oversee installation.

Respond to inquiries, identify issues, and guide the development of innovative solutions to unusually complex and unique challenges; collaborate closely with domain scientists to develop and implement computational workflows and scientific software.

Make internal and external presentations and represent the company as the primary spokesperson on external projects.

Lead and participate in selection, development, and supervision of information technology professionals and support staff; train internal users.

Plan and manage day‑to‑day operation and maintenance of computer systems, including Windows, Linux, and Unix operating systems and applications.

Collaborate with research scientists and engineers to develop, implement, and optimize computational and data analysis software, tools, and workflows; assist in porting, benchmarking, and deploying complex scientific models.

Determine comprehensive solutions for unusually complex and unique system problems.

Troubleshoot and evaluate hardware and software.

Represent the organization as a primary technical contact with suppliers and vendors.

Manage the implementation of system changes or upgrades, including deployment, resource requirements, testing, documentation, integration, and compliance and safety.

Develop plans for future installation and implementation of applicable hardware and software based on new technology.

Lead, give guidance, and provide direction to professional staff; participate in planning, selection, retention, and development of staff.

Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information.

Observe all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever, whenever, and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the company; work safely in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.

Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications

Typically requires a bachelor's degree in information technology or a related discipline and fifteen or more years of progressive professional experience in an information technology department primarily in systems administration, or equivalent working experience.

Demonstrate detailed and extensive technical expertise and application of system administration theories, concepts and practices, including system design, installation, configuration and management, performance tuning and measurement, backup, recovery (including disaster recovery planning and testing), Linux OS, TCP/IP and related protocols, network concepts, security/firewalls, web servers, virtual machines, and load balancing. Advanced knowledge of HPC, data science, and Cyberinfrastructure (CI) environments is required.

Demonstrate advanced experience with designing and implementing complex computational workflows, code curation, and data management (including large datasets, multiple data formats, and metadata).

Experience compiling and running MPI‑based code is required; experience in the intercontinental movement of large scientific datasets on ultra‑high‑speed networks is essential.

Project leadership skills, including organizing, scheduling, conducting, and coordinating work assignments to meet project milestones or established completion dates.

Provide leadership in developing new processes or systems, resolve unusually complex technical problems, and serve as spokesperson or leader on projects.

Technical expertise in one or more information technology areas; customer‑focused and possess:

The ability to identify issues, analyze and interpret data, and develop innovative solutions to a variety of unusually complex problems.

Excellent analytical, verbal and written communication skills to accurately document, report, and present findings to a variety of audiences including senior management, domain scientists, and senior external parties.

Excellent interpersonal skills to influence and guide all levels of employees, including senior managers, domain scientists, and senior external parties.

Excellent computer skills.

Ability to work independently or in a team environment is essential as is the ability to work extended hours and travel as required.

Job Type: Full‑Time Salary

Salary range: 116,480 – 208,505
