Responds to emergencies and performs duties related to fire suppression, rescue, and emergency care during ground ambulance transport, in accordance with training level and Department SOPs. Assists with supervision of station operations and oversees assigned volunteer members and departmental training. Expected to serve as the incident commander in the absence of the Village Fire Chief. This position is a regular member of the North Slope Borough Fire Department and is authorized to act under Alaska Statute 18.70. The following duties

Respond to emergencies and perform firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical duties as assigned. Operate, clean, and inspect emergency, fire, rescue, medical, and life-saving tools, equipment, and facilities. Maintain training skills and certifications through participation in applicable education and training opportunities. Inspect and maintain specialized firefighter self-contained breathing apparatus, air pack units, and other breathing and air filtration equipment. Coordinate refilling of breathing air and medical oxygen cylinders in the community and support Slope-wide efforts for these systems. Collaborate with the Village Fire Chief and Department leadership to oversee EMS operations, making recommendations as necessary. Perform Quality Assurance activities by reviewing patient care reports and fire incident reports for accuracy, completeness, compliance, and standards adherence. Assist with Department training to ensure courses are taught according to lesson plans and schedules. Ensure apparatus checks are completed and maintain inventory and mechanical check-off sheets regularly. Serve as the station HIPAA compliance officer and ensure staff receive required annual training. Perform other duties as assigned. Knowledge of NSB Fire Department policies, firefighting and emergency services techniques, safety, and legal issues. Knowledge of fire ground safety operations. Knowledge of pre-hospital emergency medical care practices. Ability to operate emergency response vehicles, specialized fire department and personal protective equipment, rescue, and medical tools and equipment. Skills in presenting training programs effectively. Ability to assess emergency medical patient needs and provide care, including in aero-medical environments. Skills in planning, organizing, and scheduling technical training classes. High School diploma or G.E.D., or a combination of education and work-related experience totaling 12 years. Valid Alaska Driver's License meeting insurance criteria. American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider certification or Alaska EMS equivalent; Emergency Trauma Technician certification. Alaska Rural Firefighter Operations certification or approved equivalent; ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 training. Ability to obtain American Heart Association Basic Life Support Instructor certification or Alaska EMS equivalent within six months of course availability.
