Position requires certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year. Valid driver’s license required at the time of application and prior to appointment. Selected candidate must undergo an extensive background investigation including psychological evaluation, medical exam, and drug screen. Skill demonstrations may be asked of all applicants interviewed.
Applicants must submit proof of eligibility to work in the United States. New employees are paid only by direct deposit.
Position Information
Position Title: Part‑Time Police Officer
Division: University Police Department
Position Summary
The employee will serve as part of a temporary pool of reserve Police Officers for UNC Asheville. University Police work to create a safe, secure and service‑oriented environment for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors. Duties include patrolling within the geographic jurisdiction, conducting criminal investigations, crime prevention, assisting motorists, parking/traffic control, and providing security at special events.
Compensation and Schedule
Hourly Rate: $25.00 per hour
Work Schedule: Temporary, Part‑time, up to 40 hours per week based on departmental needs.
Education, Experience, and Skills
- High school diploma or equivalency.
- Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission, or the ability to achieve certification within one year.
- Current possession of North Carolina BLET Certification is preferred.
- Preferred: at least two years of campus law enforcement experience.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Possession of designated technical skills or knowledge and ability to keep up with current developments.
- Ability to present information to individuals or groups, delivering presentations suited to audience characteristics and needs.
- Ability to convey information clearly and concisely in writing and verbally.
- Ability to listen and respond appropriately to others.
- Understanding of the organization’s mission, unit function, and how it interrelates with other units.
- Ability to understand the impact and implications of decisions on the community and other departments.
- Problem‑solving skills: identify problems, determine possible solutions, and resolve issues.
- Data analysis skills: obtain relevant information, relate and compare data from different sources, and identify alternatives.
