Job Description - Plant Utilities Engineer 1 (NY HELPS) (2504464) Plant Utilities Engineer 1 (NY HELPS) Required Qualifications

As per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). Physical requirements include the ability to climb, stoop and perform moderately heavy lifting/moving (up to 50 lbs). Candidate must be able to bend, lift, stretch and climb, work in confined spaces and from a ladder, scaffolding or man lift over ten feet in height. Must have a valid NYS Driver’s License and a motor vehicle record free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Out-of-State applicants: see Special Notes. To qualify for this position, the selected individual must successfully pass a pulmonary function test to certify them to wear protective equipment (e.g., respirators). Tests provided by the employing department. Appointment Qualifications

You must meet one or more of the following requirements to be considered for appointment to this title: Or 1: Graduate of heating, HVAC, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration apprenticeship program from the U.S. Air Force; Or 2: Enlisted machinery technician (MK) with the U.S. Coast Guard or possession of a certificate as a Marine Engineer issued by the U.S. Coast Guard; Or 3: Enlisted power generation equipment repairer with the U.S. Army; Or 4: Enlisted gas turbine systems technician, submarine nuclear propulsion plant operator reactor control, utilities man, machinist mate, or engineman with the U.S. Navy; Or 5: Merchant Mariner’s Document (MMD) and qualified member of the engine department (QMED) as an oiler, fireman/water tender, refrigerating engineer or engineman with the U.S. Merchant Marine; Or 6: Completion of a NYS Department of Labor registered apprenticeship for stationary engineers, plant maintenance (plumber/steamfitter), HVAC Mechanic or plant maintenance (refrigeration/AC) (See Note #1); Or 7: Possession of a High-Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer License or Stationary Engineer License; Or 8: A bachelor’s degree in Facilities Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Marine Engineering; Or 9: Four years of full-time hands-on experience in maintenance and operation of commercial/industrial/institutional facilities and related systems; Or 10: Four years of full-time hands-on experience in a residential setting performing diagnosis, operation, maintenance/repair of HVAC systems or boilers or related equipment; Or 11: An associate’s degree in HVAC and two years of qualifying experience as described in qualifying #9 or #10 above; Or 12: Completion of an HVAC certificate or diploma from a BOCES program (900 hours) or an approved certificate in HVAC/electrical/refrigeration/boiler operations and maintenance or plumbing, with two years of qualifying experience as described in qualifying #9 or #10 above. Preferred Qualifications : An Associate's Degree in Plant Utilities Technology or the equivalent. Brief Description of Duties

The Plant Utilities Engineer I for Resident Operations and West Campus HVAC will maintain HVAC systems that support the campus community and maintain all HVAC equipment. As a PUE 1, you must be able to climb, stoop, and lift heavy objects and/or equipment. Operate and perform maintenance on all HVAC and related mechanical equipment (pumps, fans, pneumatic controls, packaged terminal units, hydronic heating systems, building management systems, compressors, chemical testing and treatment, boilers, chillers, steam generators). Troubleshoot and adjust pneumatic and digital control systems. Operate, maintain, and repair high temperature/high pressure water distribution systems. Work in confined spaces and utility tunnels as needed. Operate, maintain and repair direct expansion refrigeration equipment, chilled water distribution systems, air handling and AC systems. Operate, maintain and repair ventilation systems (exhaust fans, ductwork, kitchen hoods, laboratory fume hoods). Follow work orders, document time and materials, and follow directions from senior personnel. May supervise lower level staff and provide instructions on routine jobs and equipment inspection. Respond to HVAC calls on and off shift. Implement and enforce safety procedures, use PPE, maintain clean and safe work areas. Follow lock out/tag out procedures. Other duties as assigned. This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. SG 14 Hiring Rate $56,506 per year plus $4,000 location pay. The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.
