Overview The Biomedical Engineering Technician I (BMET I) maintains medical equipment readiness and ensures conformance with manufacturer specifications by performing scheduled maintenance, repairs, end‑user support, and installations. BMET technicians support compliance with the Medical Equipment Management Plan (MEMP) to improve patient safety and advance the hospital’s mission to transform healthcare.

Responsibilities

Tests and calibrates medical devices for preventive maintenance.

Troubleshoots medical devices in clinical and bench/depot settings for corrective maintenance.

Installs and inspects new, trial, and demonstration equipment before use.

Ensures compliance with regulatory processes (CMS, FDA GMP, NJDOH, etc.).

Educates oneself in proper use, care, and maintenance of medical devices.

Reviews technical manuals for product specifications and safety.

Maintains comprehensive records of all maintenance and repair activities.

Troubleshoots device networks and reports findings to leadership.

Maintains inventory of repair parts, supplies, and technical resources.

Orders repair parts or components and supplies via the HMH ERP system.

Maintains incoming and outgoing equipment log for repair and maintenance.

Transports and sources devices between Biomedical Engineering and device owners or vendors.

Performs minor repairs on devices as directed.

Stays informed about changes, enhancements, and new features for used equipment.

Attends on‑job and offsite training, including travel that may require overnight stays.

Travels to all Hackensack Meridian Health locations as needed.

Performs other duties and projects as assigned.

Adheres to HMH organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Lifts a minimum of 50 lbs., pushes/pulls a minimum of 50 lbs., and stands a minimum of 6.0 hours a day.

Qualifications Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

AS degree in Electronics or Biomedical Engineering, or completion of a U.S. military biomedical equipment technology program, or a high‑school diploma with at least 2 years full‑time experience working on electronics equipment.

Basic understanding of electronic/mechanical devices.

Basic customer‑service and support skills for electronic/mechanical devices.

Unrestricted ability to attend on‑job and offsite training that may require travel and overnight stays.

Knowledge of current technology and its healthcare applications.

Ability to perform duties with some supervision.

Experience with a wide range of electromechanical devices, computers, networks, and software used in healthcare delivery.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred

AS degree in Electronics or Biomedical Engineering.

Full‑time experience in Biomedical Engineering.

Licenses and Certifications Required

Valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
