Tesla
What To Expect
The Field Reliability Engineering team’s mission is to improve customer experience of Tesla products by reducing field issues, in collaboration with a large cross-section of other engineering teams. Engineers on the team are responsible for one or more vehicle systems for Model S/3/X/Y, Semi or Cybertruck (specific to EVs, high‑voltage, or traditional automotive components). This is a very hands‑on individual contributor role focused on failure analysis and root‑cause activities. We are seeking a multi‑faceted Field Reliability Engineer who will be responsible for all aspects of identifying, analyzing, root‑causing, implementing countermeasures, and reporting on issues affecting the Drive Unit Inverter. To be effective, the Field Reliability Engineer will need to be intimately familiar with the detailed behavior of these electro‑mechanical assemblies and the tools and equipment used in their design and manufacture. They will work with other engineering teams to quickly mitigate and implement countermeasures of field issues, thereby improving quality, reliability, and durability of the products.
What You’ll Do
Drive issue resolution from root‑cause analysis to countermeasure implementation on all electro‑mechanical issues pertaining to the Drive Unit Inverter.
Identify root cause by performing detailed hands‑on failure analysis using a wide range of analytical tools and techniques including electrical debugging, X‑ray, microscopic inspection, cross‑sectioning, thermography, and functional testing.
Design and conduct experiments on drive units to replicate failures observed in the field.
Analyze and interpret field and diagnostic logs/data to identify commonality on trending issues.
Monitor product field performance, identify trending issues and prioritize work based on severity, occurrence, and cost of each failure mode.
Provide upfront feedback by participating in design reviews to ensure product performance, reliability, and manufacturability issues are identified and risks mitigated (DFMEAs).
Collaborate with appropriate engineers, suppliers, and contract manufacturers to drive resolution of the identified failure causes.
What You’ll Bring
Degree in Electrical/Electronic/Mechatronics Engineering or equivalent experience.
Prior applicable experience desired; preferably in a hands‑on role such as Failure Analysis, Quality, or Service in consumer electronics or automotive.
Exceptional problem‑solving and failure‑analysis skills, with strong attention to detail and analytical thinking.
Ability to use tools and business‑system applications to manage, synthesize, and interpret data.
Experience with programming languages and tools such as Python, Minitab, JMP, or similar is a strong plus.
For entry‑level candidates, experience as a co‑op or participation in student competitions (e.g., Formula SAE, Baja SAE, solar vehicle).
The successful candidate must have a broad technical background with the ability to work with engineering, manufacturing, service, and suppliers across a wide variety of issues.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills are an absolute requirement to establish effective working relationships within Tesla and outside.
Benefits
Aetna PPO and HSA plans – 2 medical plan options with $0 payroll deduction.
Family‑building, fertility, adoption, and surrogacy benefits.
Dental (including orthodontic coverage) and vision plans, both with options that have $0 paycheck contribution.
Company‑paid Health Savings Account (HSA) contribution when enrolled in the High Deductible Aetna medical plan with HSA.
Healthcare and dependent‑care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).
401(k) with employer match, Employee Stock Purchase Plans, and other financial benefits.
Company‑paid Basic Life, AD&D, short‑term and long‑term disability insurance.
Employee Assistance Program.
Sick and vacation time (flex time for salary positions), and paid holidays.
Backup childcare and parenting support resources.
Voluntary benefits to include critical illness, hospital indemnity, accident insurance, theft & legal services, and pet insurance.
Weight‑loss and tobacco‑cessation programs.
Tesla Babies program.
Commuter benefits.
Employee discounts and perks program.
Expected Compensation $84,000 – $222,000 annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits. Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
