Summary
This position is located within the National Mall and Memorial Parks in Washington, D.C. The primary purpose of the position is to service all plumbing systems within the park. The posting is open to the first 30 applicants or until 12/08/2025, whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 (Eastern Standard Time) on the closing day will receive consideration.
Duties
Perform preventive maintenance on all plumbing and mechanical equipment and parts.
Install, modify, and repair plumbing fixtures (bathtubs, showers, toilets, sinks, water fountains, and associated hardware).
Clean gravity‑type sewage drain lines, repair or replace potable water lines, and make connections.
Install and repair sewer drain systems, including septic tanks, drain fields, sewage lift pumps, and related piping.
Install, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on heating and cooling systems.
Packs valve stems, services check valves, flanges, altitude valves, gauges, and all pumping equipment used in water systems.
Requirements
U.S. Citizenship required.
Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
Required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
Must wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards; a uniform allowance will be provided.
May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
May be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
The position is considered essential during emergency situations.
Must be able to lift, at minimum, 50 pounds.
During a 1‑year probationary period, the aggrieved individual's fitness and continued employment will be evaluated by the agency. Unless the agency affirms in writing that the individual's employment should continue beyond the probationary period, the appointment will terminate at the end of that period.
Required to operate a government or private motor vehicle; a valid driver’s license is required. Must submit a Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record, and all certified driving records from all states that disclose valid driver’s licenses.
Qualifications
Sufficient knowledge and ability in troubleshooting, technical practices, equipment assembly, installation, and repair.
Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints.
Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment, including measuring instruments.
Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision.
Requirement of a valid state or District of Columbia driver’s license at the time of appointment.
Experience with volunteer work through service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) is considered valuable and may provide credit.
Physical Demands Incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms in hard‑to‑reach places. Often works in excavated holes in water and mud, and is exposed to odors and irritants. Requires substantial standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up equipment that may exceed 50 pounds.
Working Conditions Work is performed inside and outside in dirty, greasy areas, and may involve all types of weather conditions, including long periods of exposure to hot sun and harsh weather such as rain, snow, and high winds. Incumbent is exposed to dirt, dust, spray, fumes, possible bites of insects, and incidents of broken bones, cuts, and bruises. The position is not suitable for telework.
