Summary This position is located within the National Capital Parks – East in Suitland, Maryland. The primary purpose of the position is to service all plumbing systems within the park. Open to the first 30 applicants or until 12/24/2025 whichever comes first. All applications submitted by 11:59 (EST) on the closing day will receive consideration.

Responsibilities

Performs preventive maintenance to all plumbing and mechanical equipment and parts. Installs, modifies, and repairs plumbing fixtures (bathtubs, showers, toilets, sinks, water fountains, and their associated hardware)

Cleans gravity type sewage drain lines, repairs or replaces potable water lines, and makes connections

Installs and makes repairs to sewer drain systems (these include septic tanks, drain fields, sewage lift pumps, and related piping)

Installs, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance to heating and cooling systems

Packs valve stems, services check valves, flanges, altitude valves, gauges, and all pumping equipment used in water systems

Conditions of employment

U.S. Citizenship required.

Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.

Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.

You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.

May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

May be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

May be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month. Must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

Probationary Conditions As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1‑year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency; whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service. Under applicable law, employment of an individual in a probationary period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirms in writing that the appointment should be finalized.

Additional Requirements

You must be able to lift, at minimum, 50 pounds.

The position is considered essential during emergency situations.

You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver’s license is required. You must submit a Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record, and all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver’s licenses, current or past, possessed by you.

Condition of Employment (SCREEN OUT) At the time of appointment, the incumbent must possess and be able to maintain a valid state or District of Columbia driver’s license. If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.

Education There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Additional Information A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay. This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Physical Demands Incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms in hard‑to‑reach places. Often works in excavated holes in water and mud. Subjected to odors and irritants. Requires considerable standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up equipment that may exceed 50 pounds.

Working Conditions Work is done inside and outside in dirty, greasy areas. May work in all types of weather conditions, including hot sun, rain, snow, and high winds. Incumbent is exposed to dirt, dust, spray and fumes; possible bites of poisonous and nonpoisonous insects; and broken bones, cuts, bruises, etc. Must have or be able to obtain a state driver’s license. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are NOT suitable for telework.
