Job Summary The CN identifies and implements nursing interventions and evaluates results for a wide variety of patient populations. The role acts as a resource to other members of the nursing team, promotes compliance and support for policies, and provides total, comprehensive, continuous and patient-centered care. Responsibilities include assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing plan of care; delivering direct patient care; ensuring patient satisfaction; training and delegating duties; and adhering to University policies and procedures as well as federal, state and local regulations.
Autonomous nursing care is the ability of a nurse to assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The nurse is expected to practice autonomously consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgment is exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.
Provides direct patient care to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.

Qualifications
Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction
American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
American Heart Association (AHA) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 3 months of hire
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
Two (2) years of recent critical care/ICU, Emergency Department or inpatient PACU RN experience
English language proficiency (read, write, speak, understand)
Utilization of medical terminology appropriately
Knowledge of current trends in nursing
Commitment to excellence in patient care
Effective interpersonal skills
Demonstrates accountability and professionalism
Adaptability to change in a positive, professional and productive manner
Knowledge of legal implications in clinical practice and documentation
Knowledge of performance improvement and evidence-based practice
Basic computer skills
Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care, considering protective interventions, development (behavioral and physical) and physiological characteristics specific to the patient

Department Overview The PACU focuses on recovery from anesthetic agents, airway management, pain control, sedation, and hemodynamic monitoring for post-surgical adult and pediatric patients as well as patients transferred from other units. The PACU may function as an overflow ICU when the ICUs are at capacity. There are three PACUs: Main Hospital, Pavilion PACU (63 bays), CSC PACU (24 bays) and University Tower 2, UT2 (28 bays).
Department Specific Job Scope The CN2 Pre-Op / PACU Registered Nurse is responsible for a patient’s pre-operative, and immediate post-operative care until discharge home or transfer to an inpatient unit. Essential duties include: admission and pre-operative care; preparing the patient for surgery, including pre-operative education, and addressing psychosocial needs; coordinating pre-operative lab work; monitoring level of consciousness and stabilization immediately post-surgery and anesthesia; performing thorough patient assessment, anticipating potential problems and reporting assessments appropriately; acting as discharge nurse, providing discharge education; monitoring post-procedure for complications; and providing comfort to distressed patients and concerned families. Patient population includes pediatric to geriatric, including maternity, across multi-specialty acute and emergent procedures.
