Job Summary
The Chronic Registered Nurse is responsible for providing clinically competent patient care for individuals with End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD). This role includes assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation while supporting dialysis treatment operations. As a key member of the care team, the RN participates in patient teaching, clinical decision‑making, leadership functions, and quality improvement initiatives that support safe, effective treatment delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver safe and effective dialysis treatment in compliance with Kidney Care policies, nursing standards, and federal / state regulations.
Perform ongoing assessment and analysis of patient data before, during, and after treatment; document findings in the medical record and adjust care plans as needed.
Provide initial and ongoing education to patients and families regarding treatment and care requirements.
Collaborate with patient care staff to coordinate all aspects of hemodialysis treatment.
Administer prescribed medications, document justification, and evaluate effectiveness.
Respond to medical emergencies and support facility emergency response protocols.
Serve as a resource to staff, participate in training, and assist with new employee orientation.
Ensure proper laboratory specimen collection, processing, and shipping; reschedule missed labs when necessary.
Document and update nursing assessments and care plans through collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Team.
Maintain patient awareness of transplant options and modality choices.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
Requires providing direct patient care involving heavy lifting, repositioning, and ambulation support.
Frequent standing, bending, and movement of equipment up to lbs (with assistance).
Lifting of chemical / water solutions up to lbs at heights of up to feet.
Work occurs in a healthcare environment with temperature control and moderate noise.
Exposure to infectious diseases and materials may occur.
Includes desk work, computer work, and interaction with patients, physicians, and hospital / facility staff.
May require travel to other facilities or training sites.
Employees must undergo the Ishihara Color Blindness Test; failure does not preclude employment if reasonable accommodations can be made.
Supervision
Eligible to oversee Patient Care Technicians, LPNs / LVNs, and RNs as a Team Leader after:
Completion of all required training.
Minimum months of RN experience.
Minimum months of chronic / acute hemodialysis RN experience.
Education & Licensure
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
Current state RN licensure.
Current CPR / BLS certification.
Must meet state practice requirements.
Experience & Required Skills
Year of Nephrology Nursing experience within the last years.
Chronic hemodialysis experience required.
Ability to deliver safe, patient‑centered dialysis care.
Nice‑to‑Have Experience
Leadership experience in chronic or acute dialysis settings.
Prior mentorship or charge nurse experience.
Experience supporting staff training and orientation.
