Seasonal Forestry Positions - Clearwater Idaho Department of Lands Seasonal Forestry Positions- Clearwater (Orofino) support the Idaho Lands Department’s mission of sustainably managing Idaho’s Endowment Lands. These positions are integral to timber sales and reforestation efforts, generating revenue for Idaho’s public schools and other beneficiaries.

Physical Requirements

The duties require meeting prescribed physical requirements measured by the Work Capacity Fitness Test at the arduous level.

Must be able to walk over rough and steep terrain for eight to twelve hours on a daily basis.

Failure to meet the required physical qualifications will disqualify you from employment.

Resource Aide I The Resource Aide I is an entry-level resource management position. Responsibilities include assisting in timber sales and forest management projects, using basic forest measurement technology, dendrology, pathology, and entomology. May assist in prescribed burning operations and wildfire suppression, and may be required to operate light vehicles, chainsaws, and ATVs/UTVs.

Pay: Starting rate is $16.39 per hour, depending on experience.

Example Of Job Duties

Assist with Timber Management and Forest Management projects.

Conduct cruising and marking, GPS boundaries.

Perform stocking surveys, take thinning plots.

Collect cones, plant trees, establish planting plots.

Data entry, equipment maintenance, prescribed burning.

Facility maintenance and road inventory.

Minimum Qualifications

No previous experience required.

Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.

Ability to perform strenuous work for extended periods.

Must be able to walk over rough and steep terrain for eight to twelve hours daily.

Ability to learn use of radio, aerial photos, maps, surveying equipment, timber marking and cruising equipment.

Must keep accurate and legible notes and project records.

Valid driver’s license and ability to learn to operate a manual transmission vehicle if required.

Basic computer processing and data recording knowledge.

Must be 18 years of age or older.

May be required to pass a Work Capacity Test for wildland firefighting qualifications.

Resource Aide II The Resource Aide II is a trained resource management position. Responsibilities include assisting in timber sales and forest management projects with more advanced knowledge and may lead a small crew in the absence of a crew foreman.

Pay: Starting rate is $17.48 per hour, depending on experience.

Resource Foreman The Resource Foreman supervises and trains Resource Aide I and II personnel, coordinates activities, monitors performance, and maintains accurate documentation. Responsibilities include operating light vehicles, chainsaws, and ATVs/UTVs when needed.

Pay: Starting rate is $18.57 per hour, depending on experience.

Monitor and evaluate performance; organize and coordinate personnel to complete projects.

Gather and compile data; work independently on specialized projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of two (2) seasons of previous experience in a resource-related field or one (1) season and two (2) years of college education.

Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.

Ability to perform strenuous work for extended periods.

Resource Technician The Resource Technician prepares and administers limited-scope resource management projects, such as Direct Sales and forest management projects, independently. May supervise temporary personnel and assist in prescribed burning and wildfire suppression. May operate light vehicles, chainsaws, and ATVs/UTVs.

Pay: Starting rate is $19.66 per hour, depending on experience.

Supervise and train personnel.

Prepare and manage limited-scope projects: Direct Sales, forest management, pre-commercial thinning, surveys, planting.

Assist in contracting under Idaho Forest Practices Act.

Monitor and evaluate projects; work independently on specialized projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of four (4) seasons of previous experience in a resource-related field or a Bachelor of Science degree in a resource-related field, or two (2) seasons and two (2) years of college education.

Good knowledge of forest practices, GIS/GPS applications, aerial photos, maps, surveying equipment, timber marking and cruising equipment, data recording, and computer processing.

Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.

Ability to perform strenuous work for extended periods.

Must walk over rough and steep terrain for eight to twelve hours daily.
