Connecting the best candidates and businesses in the US Transmission & Renewables industry VP/Director of Operations
Location:
Flexible U.S. (Ideally EST or CST)
Piper Maddox is working with a rapidly expanding utility construction firm that is seeking a seasoned operational leader to spearhead the next stage of its growth. This company has established itself as a trusted partner in the renewable construction space and is now accelerating into substation and large‑scale transmission work. Backed by strong financial partners and a deep project pipeline, they’re ready to build a world‑class operations organization — and they need a proven builder to lead the charge.
About the Opportunity
This is a rare chance to take a sub‑20‑person operation and scale it into an 80–100+ person, multi‑state business. You’ll own the development of a multi‑year growth strategy, the build‑out of new service offerings, and the creation of the operational foundation for a top‑tier substation and T&D construction organization. If you’ve successfully grown transmission or substation teams before and enjoy both high‑level strategy and hands‑on work, this role offers the autonomy and runway to make a major impact.
What You’ll Lead
Building a scalable operational structure covering substation and a new overhead transmission line offering.
Creating staffing models, craft labor strategies, equipment plans, and repeatable execution processes.
Overseeing all project delivery from estimating through commissioning, ensuring accuracy, safety, and performance.
Growing and mentoring the internal team, including a small but capable estimating/operations group poised for development.
Strengthening relationships with major utilities across the country.
What You Bring
20+ years in utility construction with deep experience in substations and overhead transmission (115 kV+ preferred).
A track record of scaling T&D or substation operations from small teams into multi‑crew, multi‑state execution groups.
Comfortable getting “in the weeds” with pricing, production, and construction techniques.
Experience managing $20M+ annual P&Ls, ideally within a broader business unit.
Established relationships at major utilities.
Who This Is For
An entrepreneurial leader who thrives in high‑growth environments, enjoys building teams and processes from the ground up, and wants real ownership in shaping a T&D company’s next chapter.
