Supplier Industrialization Engineer, Lens Optics
What To Expect
Join Tesla's Supplier Industrialization team for Camera and Lens components within the Top Level Assembly (TLA) Electronics group. In this pivotal role, you'll drive the industrialization of camera modules, lenses (including single lenses and coatings), and related supply chain processes for Tesla's innovative projects. You'll manage end‑to‑end product lifecycle in the supply chain—from early design quality assessments with engineering teams, to supplier sourcing, process development, qualification, and ongoing quality control. Collaborate cross‑functionally to ensure robust, high‑performance products that power Tesla's cutting‑edge technologies. If you're passionate about optics, manufacturing excellence, and thriving in a fast‑paced environment, this is your opportunity to shape and drive the future of vision for Tesla products.
What You'll Do
Conduct Design for Manufacturing (DFM) to optimize camera module and lens designs for robust performance and manufacturability
Conduct design risk assessments using optical simulation tools, statistical methods, and Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) to enhance product reliability and image quality
Optimize design solutions in the early phases to achieve superior performance, scalability, and cost efficiency
Partner with Tesla's Design, Image Quality, Testing, Reliability (REL), and Supplier teams to define performance specifications and key supplier metrics
Manage supplier performance in quality, on‑time delivery, and production capacity, driving continuous improvements in operations, scalability, cost, and quality
Lead supplier audits for camera modules and lenses to verify compliance with performance, delivery, and reliability standards
Oversee supplier manufacturing process development, launch readiness for new products, and design changes, ensuring seamless integration
Guide suppliers in establishing robust processes and procedures for efficient, high‑yield production of conforming products
Validate supplier corrective actions for design or process changes, ensuring they are sustainable and applied across relevant manufacturing lines and suppliers
Recommend new or alternative materials to improve design, manufacturability, or cost‑effectiveness
What You'll Bring
Bachelor's Degree in Optics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent experience demonstrating exceptional ability)
Minimum 5 years of experience in lens and camera design and manufacturing (including auto‑focus lens designs such as VCM, actuator design and processes, single lens and coating processes), supply chain management
Proficiency with optical simulation tools such as Zemax (preferred) or Code V, conduct comprehensive optical and image quality characterization of the lens and camera module, including hands‑on analysis to assess and improve design quality, improve image performance (e.g. MTF, distortion, straylight/fare/ghost), and components like Lens coating, Single lens, Lens and full camera modules
Hands‑on experience in assembly processes for lenses and coating, camera module, Active Alignment (AA), UV curing, dispensing, camera module assembly, and Optical End‑of‑Line (EOL) testing
In‑depth knowledge about image sensor, image quality metrics and testing
Practical experience in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
Strong background in Six Sigma methodologies; DFSS experience is highly desired
Solid knowledge of statistical analysis tools (e.g., JMP or Minitab), predictive modeling, and applications
Opto‑mechanical expertise, including statistical tolerance analysis, design quality assessment, and improvement techniques
Proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and 3D CAD software (preferred but not required)
