Responsibilities
Blood gas, whole blood electrolyte, serum ionized calcium and co‑oximetry analysis.
Documentation and result communication.
Laboratory equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, quality control and calibration.

Minimum Qualifications
California Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP).
Registered with the National Board of Respiratory Care and maintains RRT registration.
Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (COARC) accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
Qualified to perform blood gas, whole blood and electrolyte analysis.
Ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure.
Proficiency with computers, calculators and nomograms.
Mechanical ability to diagnose and repair simple problems with whole blood analyzers.
Good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; ability to document and report clearly.
Ability to work collaboratively with departmental personnel and assist coworkers.
Conscious handling of compressed gas cylinders and laboratory equipment.
Ability to operate a computer/monitor for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a Blood Gas Laboratory.

Department Overview The Blood Gas Laboratory (BGL) operates a 24‑hour, 365‑day STAT specimen processing department serving the UC Davis healthcare system and other contracted facilities. STAT specimens are typically drawn on an emergent or urgent basis to manage patients’ pulmonary and other physiologic status in intensive care units and other patient care areas. The BGL is an essential component of the hospital‑wide sepsis protocol, and staff attend critical bedside procedures and events in the NICU and PICU while supporting over 15,000 specimens monthly.
