Department Chair – Physical Education / Health / Driver’s Education, Glenbard North
Term: 10-Month
Position Type: Licensed Staff
License Required: Professional Educator License (registered in DuPage County) with endorsements in General Administration, Teacher‑Leader, or Principal (Health endorsement a plus)
Qualifications
Current Professional Educator License (PEL) with an endorsement in Safety & Driver Education, PE, and General Administration, Teacher‑Leader, or Principal; Health endorsement a plus.
Master’s Degree.
Prior teaching and leadership experience.
Dynamic leadership qualities that build strong relationships with students and staff.
Clear written and oral communication skills.
Qualified evaluator in Illinois (preferred).
Reports To
Direct report to Principal.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instructional Leadership
Provide instructional leadership for the department.
Coordinate and supervise department curriculum development and assist in program evaluations.
Conduct licensed staff member evaluations focusing on professional practice and student growth.
Identify staff needs related to the improvement of instruction through professional development.
Represent the department in recommending changes in instructional materials and/or the addition of new courses.
Conduct department meetings on a regular basis.
Department Management
Maintain appropriate supervision of staff.
Maintain an inventory of capital equipment, materials, and supplies.
Prepare the annual departmental budget and administer it.
Convey to the members of the department the deliberations of the Instructional Council.
Aid the Guidance Department in the proper placement of students.
Staffing
Organize and manage efforts to recruit and retain student enrollment as needed.
Participate in the building sectioning and staffing process.
Assist in the selection of new teachers and the establishment of teaching assignments within the department.
Assist in the orientation of new teachers.
Screen student teachers and assign them to appropriate staff members.
Assist substitute teachers as needed to support student outcomes.
Supervise and evaluate non‑licensed staff when applicable.
Building Leadership
Serve in an advisory capacity to the Principal as a member of the Instructional Council.
Convey to the Principal the challenges identified by departmental staff.
Professional Responsibilities
Meet with the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and other district staff as requested.
Assist in the establishment of summer school course offerings and the assignment of summer school staff as needed.
Participate in articulation activities with associate elementary school districts.
Represent the department and discipline at community and evening events.
Attend building and district meetings as requested.
Maintain the highest level of ethical and professional demeanor with students and staff consistent with district policies.
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
Read, analyze, and interpret documents such as correspondence, surveys, and electronic media.
Write reports and other professional communications.
Present information effectively and respond to questions from individuals and groups.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and community members.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in written form.
Perform basic mathematics operations.
Solve practical problems in situations where limited standardization exists.
Maintain current job skills, especially in technology‑related activities.
Perform essential duties with an awareness of school district requirements and School Board policies.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Regularly sit and talk or hear; frequently stand, walk, operate duplicating machines and computer equipment; reach with hands and arms; repeat actions with the same hand, arm, or finger motion such as when typing.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus; withstand long‑term use of video display terminals.
May occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
Noise level is usually moderate; pace of work tasks is considered fast.
Work typically conducted at one job site; occasional attendance at meetings or events at other sites may be required.
