DEFINITION The department chair is a leadership position responsible for the implementation and evaluation of the curriculum, the supervision, training, mentoring, and evaluation of certified staff, the supervision and evaluation of classified staff, and the development and delivery of other instructional and/or extra‑curricular programs that may relate to the department specifically. The department chair reports directly to the high school principal.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES The Department Chair is responsible for ensuring that all instructional programs are administered in concert with the policies established by the Board of Education and the state and federal government within their departments.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT(S)
Current Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with the following endorsements:

KEY FUNCTIONS
A. Instruction
Authority/Responsibility:
Plan and direct the development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs.
Representative Activities:
Supervise and direct work/meetings within their departments to review instructional needs.
Ensure that all students have access to maximum instructional opportunities.
Assist teachers in making effective use of curricular/instructional opportunities.
B. Personnel
Authority/Responsibility:
Supervise and evaluate department personnel and make employment, tenure, and retention recommendations.
Representative Activities:
Interview prospective personnel and make recommendations for employment to the building assistant principals.
Observe and evaluate designated certified/non‑certified staff members.
Identify annual staffing needs in concert with the assistant principals.
Supervise all departmental personnel to be certain that all District and building policies are followed and adhered to.
C. Budget
Authority/Responsibility:
Monitor the district expenditures of department allocation in concert with appropriate district and building staff.
Representative Activities:
Coordinate and monitor the distribution of district funds, grant monies within their departments.
Work in conjunction with the building administration to develop a Departmental budget in concert with the building budget.
D. Professional Development
Authority/Responsibility:
Monitor the district professional development programs and facilitate department professional development opportunities.
Representative Activities:
Primary school official responsible for mentoring first‑year teachers.
Assist Assistant Principals in coordinating staff development and the facilitation and implementation of building/department level professional development programs.
E. Management of Department Resources
Representative Activities:
Procurement and inventory distribution collection of textbooks and other learning materials.
Other duties as assigned by the principal.
