DEFINITION
The department chair is a leadership position responsible for the implementation and evaluation of the curriculum, the supervision, training, mentoring, and evaluation of certified staff, the supervision and evaluation of classified staff, and the development and delivery of other instructional and/or extra-curricular programs. RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan and direct the development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs. Supervise and direct work/meetings within departments to review instructional needs. Ensure that all students have access to maximum instructional opportunities. Assist teachers in making effective use of curricular/instructional opportunities. Interview prospective personnel and make recommendations for employment to building assistant principals. Observe and evaluate designated certified/non-certified staff members. Identify annual staffing needs in concert with the assistant principals. Supervise all departmental personnel to ensure compliance with district and building policies. Coordinate and monitor the distribution of district funds, grant monies within departments. Work with building administration to develop a departmental budget in concert with the building budget. Primary school official responsible for mentoring first-year teachers. Assist Assistant Principals in coordinating staff development and the facilitation and implementation of building/department level professional development programs. Procurement and inventory distribution collection of textbooks and other learning materials. Other duties as assigned by the principal. CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT(S)
Current Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with the following endorsements: Secondary with Science Endorsement. Completed The Illinois Performance Evaluation - Teacher Evaluator Training.
