Tax Senior Manager, Core Tax Services – BDO USA
Join BDO USA as a Tax Senior Manager in our Core Tax Services practice. In this role, you will advise clients on the tax implications of their business decisions, identify cost‑saving solutions, and serve as the primary contact for complex tax matters.
Responsibilities
Tax Compliance
Ensure client compliance with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.
Conduct top‑level review of tax return/preparation work and resolve tax issues with the client.
Plan for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consult with the client or partner as appropriate.
Research
Identify when research is needed, frame issues clearly, and report analysis.
Provide research methodology and train managers/staff on research skills.
Involve firm specialists as appropriate.
ASC 740 (FAS 109 & FIN 48) Tax Accruals
Apply firm policies, standards and BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding ASC 740.
Help others learn and apply ASC 740 and firm policies.
Review tax provisions and prepared workpapers.
Explain income tax provision and uncertain tax positions to clients.
Tax Consulting
Develop, recommend, and implement methods to maximize client benefits and reduce taxes.
Apply knowledge of business/industry to recommend solutions.
Confere with STS specialists and monitor implementation of client service plans.
Manage inquiries from federal and state agencies and assist with appellate protests.
Implement firm strategies and manage client expectations.
Tax Specialization
Develop in‑depth expertise in one or more areas of taxation (e.g., corporate, property, international).
Organize or conduct external CPE training at least once per year.
Train and mentor managers, seniors, and associates on specialization areas.
Strategy Development
Introduce and develop new or improved ideas for clients, the firm, or staff.
Research and implement tax strategies, including experimental approaches.
Lead marketing campaigns when applicable.
Present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise and review work of associates and senior associates.
Train staff on software tools and provide performance feedback.
Act as career advisor and manage workload schedules.
Other duties as required.
Qualifications
Eight (8) or more years of tax experience, public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services.
Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred.
Prior supervisory experience required.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics. Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
CPA, attorney, or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) required. Other professional degrees or certifications preferred.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
Superior verbal and written communication skills.
Strong analytical, research and critical thinking skills.
Capacity to work well in a team environment.
Ability to develop and maintain client relationships and lead teams.
Executive presence and ability to act as the primary client contact for issues and resolution presentations.
Salary
California: $146,000 – $200,000
Colorado: $165,000 – $180,000
Illinois: $140,000 – $190,000
Maryland: $150,000 – $180,000
Massachusetts: $150,000 – $206,000
Minnesota: $130,000 – $190,000
New Jersey: $155,000 – $200,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $190,000 – $225,000
Washington: $158,400 – $215,400
Washington DC: $162,000 – $190,000
