Job Overview The Core Tax Services Senior Manager advises clients on the tax implications of their business objections, evaluates and selects alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and identifies compliant methods of fulfilling tax regulations. This role serves as the primary client contact for complex tax issues and collaborates with the office/region leadership team on marketing, networking, and business development while maintaining client relationships.

Responsibilities

Tax Compliance

Ensure both clients and firm teams comply with all applicable authorities and firm policies.

Conduct top‑level review of tax/risk and resolve tax issues with clients; involve specialists when appropriate.

Plan for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consult with clients and/or partners.

Research

Identify when research is needed and frame issues to be researched.

Provide methodology for efficient research and train managers/staff on research skills.

Involve firm specialists as appropriate.

ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals

Apply firm policies and the BDO Tax Quality Manual regarding ASC 740.

Help others learn and apply ASC 740.

Review tax provisions and workpapers; discuss income‑tax provision components and uncertain tax positions with clients.

Tax Consulting

Recommend and implement methods to maximize client benefits and reduce future taxes.

Apply tax knowledge and business/industry insight to recommend solutions.

Coordinate with STS specialists and monitor implementation of work plans for tax consulting projects.

Manage inquiries from federal and state agencies and provide assistance with protests at the appeal level.

Implement applicable firm strategies and manage client expectations.

Tax Specialization

Develop in‑depth knowledge of at least one tax specialty (individual, corporate, state/local, transfer pricing, etc.).

Organize or participate in external CPE training sessions and mentor junior staff.

Strategy Development

Introduce new or improved ideas to benefit clients, the firm, or staff.

Research, test, and implement innovative tax strategies.

Present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.

Lead marketing campaigns when applicable.

Other duties as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise associates and senior associates on all projects.

Review work prepared by associates/seniors and deliver comment.

Train associates/seniors on software tools.

Act as a career advisor to associates and senior associates.

Schedule and manage workload for associates/seniors.

Provide verbal and written performance feedback.

Education & Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.

Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.

Experience

Eight (8) or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or professional services required.

Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.

Prior supervisory experience required.

Licenses & Certifications

CPA, attorney admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction, or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) required.

Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.

Software Proficiency

Proficient Microsoft Office Suite preferred.

Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.

Salary Ranges

California: $146,000 - $200,000

Colorado: $165,000 - $180,000

Illinois: $140,000 - $190,000

Maryland: $150,000 - $180,000

Massachusetts: $150,000 - $206,000

Minnesota: $130,000 - $190,000

New Jersey: $155,000 - $200,000

NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $190,000 - $225,000

Washington: $158,400 - $215,400

Washington DC: $162,000 - $190,000
