Association Director of Finance and Budget
Position Summary
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Association Director of Finance & Budget provides leadership in financial planning, organizational budgeting, audit oversight, and fiscal policy. The role collaborates across departments and external partners to promote transparency, efficiency and alignment between financial systems and the Y’s mission and strategic goals. The director serves as a strategic, detail-oriented finance leader who oversees all aspects of financial management, reporting, and sustainability for our $10+million organization. As a key leader on the senior leadership team, the director is responsible for strengthening financial operations, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and guiding long-term fiscal strategy.

Essential Functions
Strategic Financial Leadership: Builds the financial depth and proficiency of the Y’s overall financial picture, strengthening reimbursement systems, cash management and long‑term sustainability.
Budget & Forecasting: Leads development, monitoring and analysis of the annual operating and capital budgets, translating goals into executable plans and aligning resources with strategy and mission.
Financial Operations: Manages planning, forecasting, budgeting and reporting across the Association; oversees general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll and monthly close, implementing controls to safeguard resources.
Reporting & Analysis: Prepares monthly, quarterly and annual statements, regulatory and grant compliance reports, and analyzes departmental expenses to support decision‑making.
Audit & Compliance: Directs the annual audit, oversees filings, ensures GAAP, YMCA standards and legal compliance, maintaining internal controls and fiscal policies.
Cash & Investment Management: Monitors cash flow, conducts bank reconciliations, manages investment activities and provides semi‑monthly cash position reporting.
Grant & Contract Management: Provides oversight for grant applications, reporting, fund management and compliance with funding requirements.
Leadership & Team Development: Mentors staff, builds capacity in data analysis and financial literacy, ensuring alignment with goals.
Systems & Technology: Oversees accounting systems, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in data reporting and operations; proficient with CRM and payroll software.
Collaboration & Communication: Works closely with executive leadership, program directors and partners to foster financial understanding and accountability.
Board & Committee Support: Serves as the primary liaison to Finance, Endowment and Audit Committees, providing reports and recommendations.
External Partnerships: Maintains relationships with community finance, accounting, banking and auditing firms and other vendors.
Child Safety: Enforces policies to protect youth, conducting screening, training and responding to allegations, ensuring compliance across program areas.
Association Leadership: Acts as a visible leader and ambassador, participating in initiatives and events that advance the Y’s mission and strategic goals.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field required; CPA or advanced degree preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible financial management, including at least 3 years of nonprofit leadership.
Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls and financial policies.
Demonstrated experience in budgeting, forecasting, grant reporting and audit management.
Proven ability to develop and manage complex multi‑department budgets.
Strong analytical, organizational and communication skills, with ability to present complex information clearly.
Experience with accounting software and reporting systems (e.g., Daxko, SGA, MIP).
Collaborative approach to building trust and accountability with teams and partners.
Prior supervisory experience.
Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups from all social and economic segments.
Work Environment & Physical Demands Typical duties require regular computer use, communication by computer or phone, and occasional lifting up to 10 pounds.
