Physician Assistant – Liver Transplant Program (UC San Diego) Under general supervision, the Physician Assistant is responsible for providing care to transplant patients in the Liver Transplant Program. The PA is a key member of the multidisciplinary liver transplant team, evaluating patients in the pre‑transplant and post‑transplant phases, including history and physical, patient preparation, procedures and management. The PA solves complex clinical problems and communicates directly with the attending physician, fellows and residents.

The PA follows standardized advanced practice procedure guidelines to provide follow‑through with the care plan. The PA practices consistent with Professional Standards of Practice and collaborates with an off‑site physician within the context of interdisciplinary approaches to patient care.

The major emphasis of this position is direct patient care delivery. Assignments encompass management of patients who present chronic and/or episodic health problems and may include community teaching programs and patient education development.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC‑PA).

California Physician Assistant license.

Current PA Certification from NCCPA.

BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to obtain BART within six months of hire date.

Minimum two (2) years of full‑time experience as a licensed Physician Assistant. Experience must include Solid Organ Transplant or Hepatology, which may be met through clinical rotation or practicum. If an insufficiently qualified applicant pool, the department may consider a new graduate.

Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel; skill at providing clear written, verbal and telephone communication with a wide variety of people.

Ability to maintain detailed medical information in an organized and easily retrievable manner.

Proven ability to manage comprehensive patient care with a strong emphasis on clinical decision‑making, care coordination and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes, as well as policies, procedures and protocols for patient care management.

Ability to perform initial history and physical examination, identify major medical problems and formulate appropriate plans of action.

Demonstrated professionalism and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to function well independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Demonstrated professionalism, emotional resilience and sound clinical judgment in high‑acuity and fast‑paced environments.

Ability to understand the medical as well as psycho‑social needs of a patient population with liver disease.

Comfort in a group teaching setting and willingness to do community outreach.

Excellent assessment skills and ability to make clinically sound decisions in a fast‑paced, constantly changing environment.

Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to prioritize well.

Preferred Qualifications

Liver Transplant experience and demonstrated knowledge of liver disease and transplantation, including pathology of the patient population, expected outcomes and normal and abnormal lab results.

Ambulatory care experience.

Experience with Epic Ambulatory and Epic Phoenix.

Experience leading or actively participating in Quality Improvement (QI) and/or Performance Improvement (PI) initiatives aimed at advancing clinical outcomes, operational workflows or patient experience.

Special Conditions

Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre‑employment physical.

Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain them during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical PA work experience must be within the last two years.

Minimum of one (1) year of PA experience to be considered at the Sr. Physician Assistant level.

Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $160,922 – $211,974 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%).

Hourly Equivalent: $77.07 – $101.52.

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
