This role is part of the Primary Care Mental Health Integration team at the Seattle Division of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. The psychologist will provide brief assessments, same‑day consultations, secondary/supplemental clinical supervision, and brief individual and group‑based interventions for mental and behavioral health conditions in an integrated primary care setting. The psychologist will complete VA national PCMHI competency training within one year of hire if not already certified.
Base Pay Range $83,104.00/yr - $153,982.00/yr
Eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) Eligible for the EDRP program; award amount up to $200,000 and eligibility period one to five years determined by VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of application submitted within four months of appointment.
Qualifications / Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education. Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) at the time the program was completed.
Specialty area must be consistent with the assignment.
For the purpose of meeting this requirement, "specialty area" refers to specific specialty areas recognized by the accrediting body and not to specific job duties.
APA accredits doctoral programs in clinical psychology, counseling psychology, school psychology, or combinations thereof. PCSAS accredits psychological clinical science; CPA accredits clinical psychology, counseling psychology, clinical neuropsychology, and school psychology. School psychology specialty is not eligible for VHA assignment.
OR have a doctoral degree in any area of psychology and successfully complete a re‑specialization program (including an approved internship) in an APA or CPA accredited program, consistent with the assignment. Official transcript or certificate must be provided.
OR have a doctoral degree awarded between 1951 and 1978 from a regionally accredited institution with a dissertation primarily psychological.
Internship. Must have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program accredited by APA or CPA consistent with the assignment. Acceptable alternative internships include new VHA programs applying for accreditation, VHA facilities offering pre‑doctoral internships prior to PL 96‑151, or programs sanctioned by VHA Central Office.
OR for non‑accredited internships, board certification by the American Board of Professional Psychology in a relevant specialty is required. Board certificate must be current and meet continuing education obligations.
Licensure. Hold a full, current, and unrestricted licensure to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia. Non‑licensed applicants may be temporarily appointed as graduate psychologists under grant G‑11 or G‑12 if they provide care only under supervision of a licensed psychologist for up to two years.
English Language Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English per VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j. Possible grandfathering provision for current VHA employees.
Duties
Provide comprehensive psychological assessment and diagnostic services for Veterans with a broad range of psychopathology in a primary care setting, including complex cases requiring advanced psycho‑diagnostic skills.
Demonstrate expertise in contemporary interview and psychometric assessment methods for mental disorders and behavioral health conditions.
Provide education to patients and families regarding mental disorders and best practice approaches.
Provide evidence‑based psychotherapeutic interventions—including individual, family, and group psychotherapy and psychoeducation—as indicated for the specific job setting.
Consult with health care providers about assessment findings and treatment plans to ensure coordinated, collaborative, and integrated care within the medical center.
Develop, implement, and document mental health treatment plans for an assigned caseload of patients.
Provide clinical supervision and instruction for psychology trainees (interns and/or postdoctoral fellows) assigned to the primary work setting.
Serve on a Psychology Service committee overseeing the training program.
Work schedule: 8 am – 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
