Boston Government Services, LLC. (BGS) is seeking an Iron and Steel Technology Advisor to support the Department of Energy’s Industrial Technologies Office (ITO) in Washington, DC.
About the Program Office The DOE Industrial Technologies Office (ITO) accelerates the innovation and adoption of cost‑effective technologies that position American industry to lead on the competitive stage in evolving global markets. ITO provides planning, management, and direction necessary for a balanced national program of research, development, demonstration, technical assistance, and workforce development to drive energy, materials, and production efficiency across the industrial sector.
About the Role The ITO is seeking an experienced candidate to provide strategic vision and support for innovation in the Iron and Steel Industry. The role requires interacting closely with ITO staff and National Laboratory scientists on research, development, and deployment (R&D) of projects that produce significant cost‑ and energy savings and improve the competitiveness of the Iron and Steel Industry. The selected contractor will engage deeply with the Energy‑Intensive Industries (EII) team’s technical projects and activities, interacting with experts in academia, industry, and the national labs. The position will also support the development and management of R&D programs focused on new technologies through the management of large federal programs and projects with partners in industry, academia, and national laboratories. Other duties may include engaging with other DOE programs and across the federal government.
Responsibilities
Subject Matter Expertise: Provide expertise to inform the research, development, and deployment agenda of iron and steel technologies, with a strong understanding of current technical and market barriers to technology development, commercialization, and utilization.
Strategic Planning: Contribute to strategic plans for technical research and development that advance the ITO and EII mission, including development, maintenance, and execution of an innovation strategy and management of funding awards and projects.
Program Management: Collaborate on active project management of ITO awards to oversee a research, development, and demonstration portfolio of transformative iron and steel technologies in the United States.
Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with DOE staff, contractors, industry, academia, and other stakeholders to build and maintain relationships and, as needed, participate in public‑facing aspects of the ITO Iron and Steel industry program.
Communication: Support DOE staff in preparing and presenting written and oral briefings and reports to senior federal staff, DOE leadership, external partners, and industry stakeholders.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Master’s degree in metallurgical science and engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, or other relevant field.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in the Iron and Steel industry, including understanding of plant operations, feedstock materials, and process technologies.
Knowledge of industrial technologies to recognize realistic opportunities for market expansion based on practical considerations and cost/benefit potentials.
Knowledge of business issues relevant to development in the industrial sector, including key market applications, current and evolving supply chain structures, and intellectual property considerations.
A passion for improving energy efficiency and industrial innovation.
An interest in participating in a multi‑disciplinary, metrics‑oriented, collaborative environment.
Strong written, organizational, analytical, and research skills, and a demonstrated capacity for creative thinking.
Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a security or clearance badge.
Preferred Qualifications
Located in the Washington, DC area with a hybrid work arrangement.
Ph.D. in metallurgical science and engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, or other relevant field.
10+ years of industry or related experience.
Membership in pertinent associations (e.g., AISI, AIST).
Strong project management skills.
Experience in commercialization.
Location/Work Arrangement
This position can be a hybrid work arrangement in Washington, DC or Remote.
