Description / Job Summary This role will support the Department of Energy’s (DOE), Industrial Technologies Office (ITO). ITO is seeking an experienced candidate to provide technical support on a portfolio of federal programs and projects prioritizing grid integration and load flexibility for large load users. The role requires interacting closely with ITO staff and National Laboratory scientists to understand energy consumption patterns of large loads and their impacts on the electric grid. The position requires deep engagement within the Cross‑Sector Technologies (CST) team’s technical projects and activities, interacting with experts in academia, industry, and at the national labs.
The candidate will play a key role in the launch and implementation of national initiatives related to large loads and interactions with the grid. The position will focus on data center industry dynamics, including sector landscape, needs, and priorities. The role may also require engaging with other programs at the Department of Energy and across the Federal government focused on grid integration and load flexibility efforts.
Duties / Responsibilities
Subject Matter Expertise:
Provide subject matter expertise to inform the research, development and deployment of grid integration and load flexible technologies. Have a strong understanding of the current technical and market barriers to technology development, commercialization, and implementation of grid technologies in the Data Center industry.
Strategic Planning:
Translate complex technical requirements into actionable insights for ITO’s grid integration and load flexibility efforts, resulting in measurable and trackable savings. Support activities associated with the sub‑program including the development, management, and execution of an innovation strategy which includes exploring areas of interest and participating in the process for and management of funding awards and projects.
Program Management:
Collaborate on the active project management of ITO awards and national initiatives.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Engage with DOE staff and contractors in a program of activities to build and maintain relationships with leaders from industry and academia. As needed, engage in public‑facing aspects of the ITO’s CST program.
Communication:
Support DOE staff to prepare and present written and oral briefings and reports to senior federal staff, DOE leadership, external partners, and industry stakeholders.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
Master’s degree in electrical engineering, or other relevant degree.
Minimum of 5 years of experience at a data center developer/operator, a utility with large load accounts, or grid infrastructure developer.
Knowledge of grid technologies to recognize realistic opportunities for market expansion based on practical considerations and cost/benefit potentials.
Knowledge of business issues relevant to the development in the data center industry, including key market applications, current and evolving structure of supply chains, and intellectual property considerations relevant to technology development.
A passion for improving energy efficiency and industrial innovation.
An interest in participating in a multi‑disciplinary, metrics‑oriented, collaborative environment.
Strong written, organizational, analytical, and research skills, and a demonstrated capacity for creative thinking.
Preferred Qualifications
Located in the Washington DC area with a hybrid work arrangement.
PhD in electrical engineering.
10+ years of experience in industry or other related experience.
Membership in pertinent associations.
Strong project management skills are a plus.
Experience in commercialization.
