Summary Under general supervision of the Store or Outlet Manager, the Assistant Store Manager assists in overall store operations, including collections, processing, sales, financial performance, loss control, and personnel management. The role may supervise store associates, shift supervisors, community service workers, and supported employment crews.

Responsibilities

Oversee the proper handling and processing of incoming and outgoing materials (donations, merchandise, salvage, waste). Maximize processing and sales performance through proper techniques, pricing, display, promotions, and inventory. Meet or exceed production and sales goals.

Ensure quality customer service and manage telephone customer relations. Manage supported employment crews and community service workers.

Maintain store, building, and equipment appearance, cleanliness, and safety. Periodically inventory selected areas.

Assist the Store Manager with budget, payroll, and financial goals; control expenses and manage cash—submit required reports, daily cash reports, pick-ups, and deposits.

Maintain safety, security, and loss prevention; oversee emergency procedures, staging areas, and safe handling of merchandise and hazardous materials.

Prepare and submit work orders for maintenance, investigate fraud, and keep security systems operational. Open and close the store daily, follow security protocols, and conduct periodic safety inspections.

Support supervisory duties: interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling, morale building, adherence to policies, and reporting.

Complete store reports accurately and on time. Perform additional duties such as bank transactions, alarm response, and maintaining personal phone contact.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED plus at least two years of related experience, including supervisory experience; or a combination of training/education and retail experience.

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Strong reading, writing, and verbal communication skills; ability to interpret safety rules and operational instructions.

Mathematical proficiency: calculate discounts, percentages and other financial figures.

Reasoning ability: apply common sense and solve problems involving multiple variables.

Knowledge of bookkeeping, accounting principles, and basic Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).

Understanding of Goodwill merchandise value and brand recognition.

High level of integrity, business ethics, and professionalism.

Physical Demands Requires regular standing, walking, and speaking. Frequently lifts and moves items up to 25 lb and occasionally up to 100 lb. May push crates (up to 600 lb) on flat or sloped surfaces. Must assist customers with heavy donations, use hand trucks when appropriate, and apply proper lifting techniques.

Vision requirements include close, distance, and color vision. Protective eyewear and gloves are required when handling chemicals.

Work Environment The work environment is hectic and fast paced with regular deadlines and production quotas. Employees may be reassigned or transferred within the organization. Exposure to wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes, chemicals, weather, and electrical shock is possible. Noise level is typically moderate.
