Construction Engineer – County of San Diego
The County of San Diego invites you to pursue an excellent career opportunity as a Construction Engineer within the Department of Public Works (DPW). As a Resident Engineer you will work on Capital Improvement Projects, landfills, road projects, or private development, performing engineering duties on large and complex construction contracts.
Position Overview A Construction Engineer may be assigned to the Management Services Division supporting closed landfills and private roads/landscape maintenance, or to the Engineering Services Division which includes Construction Engineering/Materials Lab and the Capital Improvement Program. Engineers may also be assigned to the Land Development Division, Flood Control, Watershed Protection Program, or Private Development Construction Inspection units, reviewing design, construction, permits, and public inquiries.
Hiring Process and Timeline
Job offers are made after successful completion of interviews.
Background investigation and pre-employment medical screening are conducted approximately 3 days following successful background results.
Start date is based on medical screening or an alternate mutually agreed date.
Minimum Qualifications
At least six (6) years of experience applying civil engineering formulas, theory, and practices to modern construction methods, design, and inspection procedures on public works improvement projects; OR
A bachelor’s degree in Civil, Construction, Structural, Mechanical Engineering, or Construction Management AND two (2) years of related experience; OR
A master’s degree in the same fields AND one (1) year of related experience; OR
A combination of education and experience as described above.
Note: Some positions may require a Qualified Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) Developer (QSD) and/or a Qualified SWPPP Practitioner (QSP) certificate within one year of appointment.
Condition of Employment Prospective candidates undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and pre-employment medical screening before beginning County employment. Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
