Tax Senior Manager, Core Tax Services

Job Summary The Core Tax Services Senior Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business decisions, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. In this role, the Senior Manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizes and communicates potential risks and potential changes in the tax policy, and makes top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. The Senior Manager will be a critical member of the office/region leadership team and actively participate in marketing, networking and business development while maintaining client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex questions.
Responsibilities
Tax Compliance
Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensures self and client service teams comply with firm policies.
Conducts top‑level review of T/R and resolves all tax issues; involves specialists where appropriate.
Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as appropriate.
Research
Identifies when research is needed, frames issues concisely, and reports the analysis.
Identifies complex issues for the engagement team and provides research methodology.
Trains managers/staff on research skills and frames tax issues for analysis.
Involves firm specialists as appropriate.
ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
Applies ASC 740 and firm policies proactively; reviews tax provisions and workpapers.
Explains and discusses income tax provision components and uncertain tax positions with clients.
Helps others learn ASC 740 and related firm policies.
Tax Consulting
Develops, recommends and implements methods to maximize client benefits and reduce tax liabilities while managing risk.
Coordinates with STS specialists to determine applicability of STS consulting specialties.
Monitors implementation of client service plans for consulting projects.
Manages written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with minimal assistance.
Provides effective assistance with protests at the appeals level.
Implements applicable firm strategies and manages client expectations.
Tax Specialization
Develops in‑depth understanding of one or more tax areas (individual, corporate, property, sales, ESG, international, etc.).
Organizes and conducts external CPE training sessions in the area of specialization at least once per year.
Trains and mentors managers/seniors/associates on specialization areas.
Strategy Development
Introduces and develops improved ideas to benefit clients, the firm or firm personnel.
Researches and implements new tax strategies and ideas.
Consistently suggests improvements to work products and approaches.
Might lead marketing campaigns and present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects.
Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments.
Trains associates and seniors on current software tools.
Acts as a career advisor to associates and senior associates.
Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates.
Provides verbal and written performance feedback.
Education
Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred.
Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Eight (8) or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience required.
Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
Prior supervisory experience required.
Superior verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to effectively delegate work.
Strong analytical, research, and critical‑thinking skills and decision‑making skills.
Capacity to work well in a team environment.
Capability to develop and manage a team of tax professionals.
Ability to compose written tax advice.
Capability of effectively building and maintaining client relationships.
Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions to clients.
License/Certifications
CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or the equivalent) required.
Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.
Software
Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
