Key Responsibilities
Process and reconcile utility billing transactions, cash receipts, and customer payments
Audit and review billing records for accuracy and compliance
Prepare journal entries and assist with monthly/annual financial closings
Address customer inquiries regarding utility accounts, rates, and billing arrangements
Track deposits, resolve discrepancies, and ensure timely posting to accounts
Support budget preparation and monitoring for the Utility Billing Division
Assist with annual audit preparation and special projects
Provides technical assistance to resolve system software issues
Core Competencies
Utility billing practices & cash handling procedures
General ledger accounting & reconciliations
Financial reporting & variance analysis
Proficiency in Microsoft Office & accounting software
Strong organizational and time-management skills

May provide technical and functional direction, guidance and training to lower-level staff

3+ years of technical accounting experience (utility billing preferred)
Independent worker with sound judgment and discretion
Accuracy and efficiency in a fast-paced office setting

Education and Experience Guidelines Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience
Three (3) years increasingly responsible technical accounting experience.
Applicants must submit the following:
A completed City of Brentwood Employment Application.

The examination process will consist of:
Application Review - Review of applications for minimum qualifications for the position and to ensure all materials have been submitted.
Written Exam - Applicants possessing these requirements will be invited to take a written test. The examination will cover elements of the knowledge and abilities identified in the job description and is tentatively scheduled for January 12, 2026.
Eligible List - All applicants that pass the examination process will be placed on the eligible list which is good for at least 6 months and may be extended up to an additional 18 months. This eligible list will be used by the City of Brentwood to fill all current and future openings in this classification as long as the list is active.
