Summary This position is located in either Appomattox Court House National Historical Park or Bookter T. Washington National Monument. It involves performing simple and routine work in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related utilities, using a variety of trade practices associated with carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades.

Duties

Perform simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment, and related utilities.

Conduct minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools, such as replacing broken planks on picnic tables, replacing broken windows with precut stock, and adjusting or replacing hinges, latches, and catches.

Operate a light truck to pick up supplies and transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work.

Clean and service chemical toilets, restrooms, and other campground or visitor facilities, making minor repairs as needed and referring problems to higher‑graded workers.

Perform routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools to re‑grade and reset barriers, restoring areas to original appearances, and collect trash.

Physical Demands Work from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms; stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.

Working Conditions Work is performed inside and outside, where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Work may be required in inclement weather and wearing protective equipment and clothing that can be heavy and uncomfortable.

Requirements

U.S. Citizenship required.

Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.

Will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.

Must possess a valid state‑issued driver's license and be able to submit a photocopy for verification; may be required to operate a government or private motor vehicle as part of duties.

Must wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards; a uniform allowance will be provided.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old or at least 16 years old with appropriate educational or vocational credentials.

Government housing is not available.

Qualifications

Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (screen out).

Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading).

Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.

Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair.

Knowledge of materials and technical practices.

Use of measuring instruments.

Volunteer Experience Experience includes paid and unpaid work such as volunteer service through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (professional, philanthropic, community, student, etc.). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide credit toward this position.

Education There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Additional Information This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Non‑Competitive Rehire Eligibility Temporary seasonal employees can maintain non‑competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of less than 1,040 hours within the National Park Service during their service year. Exceeding this limit reduces eligibility.

Employment Termination Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.
