General Summary The Patient Service Coordinator is the first point of contact for patients at the assigned practice or hospital department, greeting them courteously and directing them efficiently through the care process. Responsibilities include appointment scheduling, patient registration, insurance verification, co-payment collection, Time‑of‑Service (TOS) payment processing, chart updates, telephone triage, and supporting initiatives that improve patient experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Assist with patient intake and registration, including insurance verification and explaining payment responsibilities.

Collect co‑payments, record TOS payments, review encounter forms, and prepare charge batches.

Schedules appointments, including follow‑up and referral appointments, and completes requisitions for applicable tests.

Provide telephone triage, disseminate messages, and prioritize calls according to policy.

Maintain accurate patient records by updating demographic and insurance information and scanning or indexing forms.

Track missed appointments and enter data regarding no‑shows.

Perform checkout procedures, entering patient charges and verifying demographic and insurance information.

Support quality‑improvement initiatives, including new technology implementation and patient‑experience enhancements.

Maintain a clean, welcoming front‑office environment and represent MedStar Health positively.

Collaborate with medical providers and other staff to ensure continuity of care and high patient satisfaction.

Participate in meetings, committees, and multidisciplinary quality improvement teams.

Adhere to MedStar Health’s High Reliability Organization (HRO) principles and Just Culture standards.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required.

Preferred: One year of relevant education or substitute for one year of required work experience.

Experience

Less than 1 year – 1 year of customer service experience in a health‑care setting, including use of computerized scheduling and registration systems.

Knowledge of IDX/GE Centricity business is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

CPR – BLS/NRP certification required within 90 days of hire.

Additional unit/specialty certifications as required by the department.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Excellent interpersonal and customer‑service communication skills with good telephone etiquette.

Strong knowledge of medical terminology and ability to communicate orally and in writing.

Ability to perform under high‑pressure, prioritize tasks, and support multiple providers in a busy environment.

Salary Range USD $18.70 – $32.72 per hour.
