Information Systems Technician

Information Systems Technician positions coordinate the acquisition, installation and movement of software, desktop and portable computer systems, printers and other peripheral devices; may review requests for and recommend software and hardware acquisition; provide one‑on‑one training; troubleshoot the less complex hardware and software problems or coordinate problem resolution by the City Help Desk, private vendor staff, or other City IT staff; assist professional information systems personnel in the implementation of a component of a larger, more complex system; maintain computer inventory; may develop minor computer applications using off the shelf software of programming language generations; develop and generate a variety of specialized statistical and operational reports; may represent the department on departmental technical committees; maintain systems documentation; review information systems costs for appropriateness; may support wired and wireless networks; may hand code and troubleshoot HTML and DHTML (XML desirable) using industry standard web authoring tools; and perform other duties as assigned.
Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
Information Systems Technician employees may be required to lift heavy items weighing up to 30 pounds.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Successful completion of 30 semester/45 quarter college‑level units, which MUST include at least 15 semester/22.5 quarter college‑level units in the field of Computer Science or Information Systems. Coursework limited to computer programming or computer hardware repair is NOT qualifying.
One year of full‑time experience performing paraprofessional information systems support work. Qualifying experience MUST include three or more of the following methods:
Computer hardware or software assessment, acquisition, and installation.
Asset management, system accounting, and resource control.
Training system users.
Recommending modifications or upgrades to existing systems.
Performing ongoing system maintenance and troubleshooting.
NOTES
Experience solely as a system user or programmer/or performing digital troubleshooting, removal and replacement of discrete system components, or repair of electronic equipment is NOT qualifying.
City of San Diego employees using Out‑of‑Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE
An Associate’s Degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Systems, GIS, or a closely related field.
Experience providing technical support for desktop systems and Windows operating environments, including Microsoft Office Suite, user account administration, Active Directory configuration, SAP or similar enterprise systems, GIS applications, and end‑user assistance with hardware, software, printing, formatting, and basic MS Access functions.
Experience in imaging computer systems and deploying software using remote installation tools such as SCCM or equivalent.
Experience supporting departmental reporting or data‑query tools such as Business Objects, Crystal Reports, or GIS‑based mapping tools that produce analytical outputs or visualizations.
Experience evaluating, acquiring, installing, and maintaining computer hardware, software, GIS tools, and related peripheral devices.
Familiarity supporting Apple platforms (iMac, MacBook, macOS) and mobile device platforms (iOS and Android).
