LOCATION OF POSITION Alternative to Detention‑Evening Reporting Center (Region 3) Baltimore, MD 21215 – Reisterstown Office

Main Purpose of Job Join Us in Making a Difference at DJS! The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) is dedicated to transforming young lives, creating safer communities, and fostering equitable systems. We are seeking passionate individuals for the role of Community Detention Officer I to supervise and guide youth in court‑ordered alternatives to detention at the Evening Reporting Center (ERC). This position supports a system that keeps youth in the community pending court appearances, often with GPS, electronic monitoring, or as a pre‑court service for minor cases. The ERC serves both male and female populations with a capacity of 15‑20 youth, overseeing daily attendance, supervisory guidance, safety, care, and program continuity in accordance with DJS policies. The Community Detention Officer will ensure youth comply with program rules, court conditions, and will cover direct care during shifts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high‑school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education, as described by the Correctional Training Commission regulation.

One (1) year of experience supervising youth in a structured environment (e.g., recreation center, school setting, juvenile services facility, or community program).

Substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non‑commissioned officer in correctional officer classifications on a year‑for‑year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

At least three (3) years of experience supervising youth in a structured environment.

Experience supervising youth in a juvenile facility.

Knowledge of the processes and procedures of the juvenile court system.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates appointed to this classification must obtain certification by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission.

Employees may be assigned duties requiring operation of a motor vehicle and must possess a valid Maryland motor‑vehicle operator’s license.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

U.S. citizenship or resident‑alien status, at least 21 years of age, thorough background check (including fingerprinting and drug testing), oral interview, physical and psychological examinations.

Subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09.
