The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) invites applications from qualified individuals interested in providing creative communication leadership in support of college programs and system initiatives. This position supports the Executive Division of SBCTC, providing system-wide communication support through publications and electronic information for and about the college system. This position also supports the legislative process, responds to and works with the media, and provides leadership and guidance related to media relations. Headquartered in Olympia, Washington, this position may be eligible for some telework. Develop public communication programs and public advocacy campaigns in consultation and cooperation with the colleges. Work with agency leadership and college Information Officers to develop legislative messaging strategies and materials. Provide media relations guidance to agency leadership. Prepare news releases, background information, talking points, and some speech writing. Serve as the first point of contact for media. Act as liaison for communications and public information between the State Board and college information officers, and others as needed. Consult with colleges handling sensitive communications issues. Edit and write reports and other materials written by State Board staff for publication and broad distribution. Develop/supervise agency publications, including Legislative News (weekly during legislative sessions) and publications designed for potential students, employers, and other audiences. Prepare original copy and edit copy drafted by others. Organize and manage web content for the State Board. Perform other duties as required. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Think creatively, act resourcefully, and exhibit excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Demonstrated ability to develop positive relations with reporters and editors in the electronic and print media. Experience with digital media and social media platforms. Writing and editing press releases, talking points, speeches, one-pagers, and other deliverables in a clear manner for intended audiences. Ability to think strategically and align media outreach and media campaigns with system-wide goals. Evaluate campaign effectiveness and adjust strategies based on data and feedback. Ability to draft rapid response statements under pressure. Handle sensitive or confidential information with discretion. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate: Bachelor's degree and five years of experience providing leadership in public relations, media relations, print or broadcast journalism, or a closely related area, or a combination of education and/or relevant experience. Knowledge of the legislative process and experience with communications for elected officials, or a similar environment. Experience with social networking for marketing and communications. Experience with developing and implementing successful, cooperative public information strategies and programs among separate organizations. Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, including AP style. HOW TO APPLY
