About Fathom
Fathom is an independent 501(c)(3) whose mission is to find, build, and scale innovative governance solutions that foster public trust in AI, while unleashing the power of American innovation. We are architects of AI oversight focused on co-designing a better AI future for all. This requires that everyone – from businesses and NGOs to the public – has a say in what that world looks like. Fathom creates solutions and pursues the policy change required for a positive AI future by building consensus across stakeholders and communities, pursuing state and federal advocacy, convening experts, and funding research and polling. The public, government, and industry are all calling for an approach to shape the future of AI that guards against harm while enabling innovation and adoption. Across political and sectoral lines, there’s consensus that neither government nor industry alone can create this better AI future. From this, we developed a policy mechanism for Independent Verification of AI, which empowers qualified experts to assess AI models and applications against safety, reliability, and trustworthiness criteria. We believe that this independent verification is essential for public trust and safe deployment — and that a thriving ecosystem of Independent AI Assurance Providers (IVO Partners) will be needed to meet this demand. To make that possible, these organizations need a shared platform to demonstrate the viability of this approach and a collective voice to shape the policies and markets that underpin their work. About the Role
The Director, Member Services at Fathom will be the founding architect of our membership function, responsible for designing, launching, and managing all member-facing operations for a new coalition / trade association. This leader must be equally comfortable doing one-off, high-touch work to win early momentum and designing the systems that will scale as the organization matures. They will serve as the bridge between founding members, the association’s strategic direction, and the long‑term architecture of our membership experience. Success in this role means creating durable member value, driving healthy growth without mission drift, and establishing a professionalized membership engine that becomes a core asset of the association. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a builder environment, understands the dynamics of trade associations, and is motivated by the opportunity to create structure, deliver impact, and contribute to an organization’s long‑term growth. Key Responsibilities
Build a High-Trust, High-Value Membership Foundation
Establish an early membership experience that feels high-touch, personal, and indispensable to founding members. Demonstrate clear member value through programming, engagement, responsiveness, and relationship stewardship. Create essential early processes (onboarding, engagement loops, satisfaction sensing) that can later be operationalized and scaled. Develop the organization’s understanding of member needs — and convert those insights into tangible benefits and programming. Drive Membership Growth
Grow the membership base by identifying high‑fit prospects aligned with the association’s purpose, focusing on growth that increases credibility. Represent the organization externally with clarity and authority, ensuring new members understand both benefits and responsibilities. Establish the patterns of healthy membership composition that set the foundation for long‑term legitimacy. Deliver Programming & Engagement That Creates Demonstrable Member Value
Design member offerings (working groups, convenings, briefings, resources) that strengthen participation and reinforce the association’s purpose. Increase meaningful engagement across committees, working groups, and policy discussions. Ensure members consistently experience the association as a trusted partner, problem‑solver, and amplifier of their needs. Translate complex technical or policy work into accessible, actionable communication for busy executives. Professionalize and Scale the Membership Function Over Time
Define and document the systems, SOPs, and governance structures that enable membership operations to scale responsibly. Build the roadmap for transitioning from early scrappiness to a durable, efficient, professional membership organization. Develop reporting rhythms, dashboards, and governance processes that support leadership, the board, and membership councils. Implement sustainable retention, engagement, and satisfaction mechanisms as the association grows. Ensure Data‑Driven Decision‑Making, Transparency, and Operational Excellence
Establish core membership metrics and reporting standards (growth, retention, engagement, satisfaction, program utilization). Manage accurate membership records, dues systems, and compliance requirements. Provide leadership with clear, actionable insights that shape strategy, member services, and long‑term planning. Ideal Profile
Experience (7–10+ years)
The ideal candidate is: Experienced in managing members of a trade association or similar organization. Excellent in written and verbal communication, including the ability to translate technical or policy content into clear, accessible updates. Skilled at navigating competing priorities, maintaining trust, and representing the association with credibility. Able to see the big picture and align membership efforts with organizational goals. Someone who excels in structured relationship management but is also comfortable with ambiguity, iteration, and growth. Data‑driven, organized, and able to balance strategic thinking with hands‑on execution. Motivated by mission‑driven work and the opportunity to shape a high‑impact membership model. Professional experiences and qualifications: Demonstrated experience building or scaling a function in an early‑stage or fast‑growing organization. Membership management or customer success experience Track record of strong strategic judgment, including making tradeoffs and protecting mission focus. Proven ability to manage senior stakeholders and cultivate high‑trust, long‑term relationships. Background navigating multi‑stakeholder environments with diplomacy and credibility. Track record of designing or delivering programs that drive engagement, participation, or member value. Evidence of operational excellence, including reliable execution and detail‑oriented delivery.
